DESCRIPTION:Bitter Root Back Country Horsemen host their monthly meeting on Thursday\, October 17th at the Corvallis School Cafeteria on Eastside Highway in Corvallis. Potluck dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. and the general meeting starts at 7 p.m. Speakers will be Smoke Elser and Lee Bowman (MWA Shining Mountain chapter president) presenting the program “Trails in the Bob: Past\, Present\, and Future.” Members do not need to own a horse or mule to be part of the group. Several of the volunteers hike to clear trails and there are many jobs that the group does for the community that don’t require an equine partner. The Elks National hoop shoot is a free throw contest for both boys and girls ages 8 through 13. Beginning at the local Elks Lodge\, winning contestants advance through District\, State\, Regional and National competition. The program is free to all contestants. The Local Bitterroot Valley Elks Lodge helps sponsor contestants and their families at every level of the competition. One boy and one girl from each division (ages 8-9\, 10-11\, and 12-13) will win a national title at the National Finals in Chicago and have their names inscribed in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Two National champions will receive the Getty Powell Award for the most baskets made during the National Finals. DESCRIPTION:The Corvallis Civic Club will meet on Monday\, October 21\, at 7 p.m. in the Corvallis High School library. Tim Johnson\, a candidate for U.S. House\, will be a guest. Meetings are open to the public and the Civic Club welcomes the participation of all interested community members. Regular meetings generally take place on the third Monday of the month. The Corvallis Civic Club is a volunteer community group dedicated to facilitating projects of benefit to the Corvallis community. \nPast projects include school/community tennis courts; tree plantings and benches on Main Street; the Corvallis to Woodside pedestrian/bike path; pathway east along Willow Creek Road; and Welcome to Corvallis signs. Most recently the group has spearheaded efforts to construct a pedestrian/bicycle bridge across the Bitterroot River at Woodside and to improve the safety of pedestrian and bike crossings in the Corvallis school zone and along the Woodside Cut-Off Road\, and lower the speed limit on the Cut-Off Road. The speaker will be Amy Cilimburg\, one of the founders and currently Executive Director of Climate Smart Missoula. Amy was the Director of Bird Conservation for Montana Audubon for seven years\, and was recently appointed to the Governor’s Climate Solutions Council. She’ll speak to current local climate resiliency and community efforts to take action on climate change through new\, localized and statewide initiatives. And she promises to leave you with hope\, not despair!
