SUMMARY:Monarchs Matter Part 2: Bitterroot Monarch Butterfly Project
DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, June 29 at 6 p.m. the North Valley Public Library will host part 2 of this series via Zoom. “This will be much more hands-on about what folks can do to support the Monarchs’ migration through the valley\,” explains\, Maggie Hirschauer\, Bitterroot Monarch Project Coordinator. \nMonarch butterflies feed on nectar from many different wildflowers but only lay eggs on milkweed. Milkweed is a required food source for their larvae. There are several species of milkweed native to Western Montana. Showy milkweed is the most widespread and numerous in the Bitterroot Valley. The Field Crew transplanted around 1\,000 showy milkweed root cuttings across the MPG Ranch in late April 2019. \nVolunteers can help map milkweed and survey results. Throughout the season crews scout roadsides and parks from Missoula to Stevensville for milkweed. When monitoring milkweed\, they walk a grid pattern searching all surfaces of every milkweed plant for signs of monarchs. To hear more about Monarch butterflies and/or to volunteer to help map milkweed join the Zoom presentation. Registration is necessary to receive the Zoom link for the talk. Go to NorthValleyLibrary.org and click on the Calendar. Find the event/date and click; a registration window will open. For more information about current offerings and events at the library check the website at northvalleylibrary.org.
