SUMMARY:Poets in the 'Root
DESCRIPTION:Nature in nearly all manifestations has inspired poets since there were poets! And at least since the Roman poet Horace wrote Ars Poetica or the Art of Poetry in 19BC\, literature\, including poetry\, sought to both instruct and delight. \nPoets in the ‘Root combines these two aims in an uncommon but simple way. One person reads a favorite poem or part of a poem that uses an element of nature to convey its message. Most read poems by others\, but if you’re a poet\, we’d love to hear your work. Then the same or another person gives an explanation (5 minutes max) of some aspect of that nature element.  The explanation focuses on nature interpretation\, not literary interpretation.  Listeners get a bit of poetry and a bit of natural history. \nThe program will be hosted by Teller Wildlife Refuge\, at the Barn\, on February 8th\, from 1-3. We’ll have refreshments\, including coffee\, tea\, wine\, and snacks! \nFree and open to the public. \nBitterroot Bird Alliance\, Teller Wildlife Refuge\, the Montana Natural History Center\, Blue Heron Nature Tours\, and Chapter One Bookstore are sponsoring this event. Chapter One is providing coupons for 20% off one book of poetry! \nIf you want to read\, provide natural history interpretation\, or have questions\, contact Micki Long at mickilong@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Wonders of Hot Water--Lecture series on hot springs and geothermal energy
DESCRIPTION:——————————————-\nThe Wonders of Hot Water\n\n\nA Weekly Lecture Series\non the Origins\, Legends\, and Uses\nof the World’s Hot Springs\n\n\n\nTuesday Evenings\n\nJuly 23 through August 20\n\n7:00pm to 8:00pm\n\n\n\nLolo Hot Springs Resort\nwww.lolohotsprings.com\n————–‐———————\n\n\n\nThe amazing beauty and variety of uses of hot springs around the world will be the subject of a series of lectures at Lolo Hot Springs Resort in July and August.\n\n\n\nWeek 1\nTuesday\, July 23\nMontana’s Frontier Hot Springs 1880-1920\nMontana’s hot springs and hot water resorts bubble with fascinating histories of Native American legends\, isolated wilderness soaks\, and glittering thermal water spas. Crude bathhouses built by early settlers in the 1800s gave way to ornate bathing resorts and social gathering centers. Montana’s most famous resorts – including Boulder Hot Springs\, Hunter’s Hot Springs\, Corwin Hot Springs\, and Broadwater Hot Springs – flourished and then faded from Montana’s landscape.\n\n\n\nWeek 2\nTuesday\, July 30\nLife at High Temperatures in Yellowstone’s Hot Springs\nLife on earth may have first appeared in hot springs—and now many plants and animals have adapted to live in hot springs in Yellowstone and beyond. There’s an amazing diversity of living inhabitants of hot springs\, including cyanobacteria\, fungi\, protozoa\, mosses\, crustaceans\, and insects.\n\n\n\nWeek 3\nTuesday\, August 6\nMedical Uses of Hot Springs in the Frontier West\nTestimonials abound on the curative power of thermal water. This lecture will share many of these stories and examine current research on the use of thermal and mineral waters for treating diseases and improving mental health and well-being.\n\n\n\nWeek 4\nTuesday\, August 13\nCapturing the Earth’s Energy for Space Heating and Power Generation\nMost of downtown Boise\, Idaho\, is heated with geothermal energy. And several of the buildings on the Bozeman campus of Montana State University are heated with geothermal energy. This session will examine these projects as well as dozens of other examples of capturing geothermal energy for heating buildings\, downtown communities\, and greenhouses. We will also explore how geothermal resources are converted to electrical power through innovative new technologies\n\n\n\nWeek 5\nTuesday\, August 20\nInternational Thermal Spas and Geothermal Energy Projects\nThis session will take a global tour of hot springs resorts and geothermal areas around the world\, including the elegant spas of Central Europe\, the historic onsen resorts in Japan\, and the beautiful natural hot springs of Iceland.\n\n\n————————\n\n\nJeff Birkby\, Presenter\n\n\nJeff Birkby writes and lectures on the history and use of geothermal energy for electric power generation\, space heating and hot springs tourism. He is the author of Geothermal Energy in Montana–A Consumers’ Guide\, Touring Montana and Wyoming Hot Springs and Touring Oregon and Washington Hot Springs.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll lectures are free and open to the public. No reservations needed.\n\n\nCome up to Lolo Hot Springs early for dinner and a soak\, and then stay for the lectures starting at 7pm on Tuesdays.

SUMMARY:Western Montana's Restricted Districts 1870-1840s
DESCRIPTION:This program will dive into the rich history of the restricted–red light–districts in Missoula and Hamilton\, spanning between the region’s earliest red-light settlement in 1870 through the deaths of the original founders in the early 1940s. \nThroughout the talk\, we will look at the influence these ostracized communities had on the socio-cultural development of the Western Montana region\, particularly in the Bitterroot Valley\, as well as the interconnected relationships shared between the varying districts that provided the foundation for survival in the American West. Additionally\, we will also look into the lives of some of the districts’ key members such as Clara and Henry Smith\, Frank Gray\, Tish Nevins\, Sam Tom\, and Mary Gleim. \nThis lecture will take a deep dive into the region’s diverse demographics at the turn of the 20th century as well as showcase just how these forgotten Montanans paved the way for our society today. \nThis program is part of the Montana Library Network’s virtual programming series. NVPL will host a watch party; the presenter will not be on-site. Zoom option available.
