SUMMARY:GRAIN BY GRAIN: A QUEST TO REVIVE ANCIENT WHEAT\, RURAL JOBS\, AND HEALTHY FOOD
DESCRIPTION:Health and Wellness\, we can learn from farmer and author\, Bob Quinn\, joining us via Zoom. \nWhen Bob Quinn was a kid\, a stranger at a county fair gave him a few kernels of an unusual grain. Little did he know\, that grain would change his life. \nYears later\, it would become the centerpiece of his multimillion dollar heirloom-grain company\, Kamut International. How Bob went from being a true believer in better farming through chemistry to a leading proponent of organics is the unlikely story of Grain by Grain. \nAlong the way\, readers will learn why ancient wheat might be the solution to gluten sensitivity\, as well as to improving health; how regenerative organic agriculture can bring back rural jobs; and how time-tested farming practices can replace toxic pesticides and fertilizers. \nWhen it comes to food\, we don’t have to accept the status quo. By following Bob’s example\, we can grow a healthier future\, one grain at a time. \nYou may join us in the community room\, with a mask or via Zoom. Either way please register on the Library’s calendar to get up to date information.

We will learn about the sense of place in a story through observation of the natural surroundings\, learn about story arc\, and learn how to better speak in front of a crowd. The workshop is open to all ages and abilities. \nPlease register on our calendar; you will receive a Zoom link in your confirmation email. You may also attend in person in our community room\, with a mask and distancing in place. Marc will join us via Zoom. \nPresenter Bio\nMarc Moss was professionally trained as an English educator\, certified in 1995 to teach English 7-12 in the state of Ohio. He went on to teach in the world’s best classroom\, Yellowstone National Park\, as a seasonal ranger-naturalist from 1999-2001\, telling the stories of the geothermals there\, the ecology of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and the Historical Fort Yellowstone. He fell in love with storytelling listening to Garrison Keillor on Prairie Home Companion on long drives with his dad as a kid. Upon Arriving in Missoula\, he experienced formal personal storytelling for the first time at a live storytelling event at the PEAS Farm\, and has been cultivating personal storytelling in Missoula in some fashion ever since.

SUMMARY:"The River" - Movie Night & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Another great workshop brought to you by the North Valley Public Library. “The River” is a haunting short story by the American author Flannery O’Connor. It is one of the ten stories included her short story collection A Good Man Is Hard to Find\, published in 1955. Much of O’Connor’s work focuses on concepts of pride\, sin\, and redemption.  Surprisingly\, O’Connor’s work carries a cult following.  You can find odd adaptations of her stories on YouTube.  She said\, “To the deaf you have to shout and to the blind you have to draw large startling figures.” \nFlannery does indeed draw large startling figures.  In this short story a young boy grows up in a home with parents preoccupied.  HIs “sitter” takes him to her home where they go to the river to witness a baptism.  Later the young boy returns to the river\, seeking something more.  Baptism plays large in one of O’Connor’s novels\, “The Violent Bear It Away”.   In the film discussion\, Bevins will play with these themes\, comparing and contrasting O’Connor’s works. \n“The River” was adapted to film by Barbara Noble in 1977. It runs 29 minutes and will be followed by a movie / book / author discussion with Nancy Bevins.  Bevins lived in the South for over six years and explored the literary genius of Flannery O’Connor. \nMary Flannery O’Connor (March 25\, 1925 – August 3\, 1964) was an American novelist\, short story writer and essayist. She wrote two novels and thirty-two short stories\, as well as a number of reviews and commentaries. \nShe was a Southern writer who often wrote in a sardonic Southern Gothic style and relied heavily on regional settings and grotesque characters\, often in violent situations. The unsentimental acceptance or rejection of the limitations or imperfection or difference of these characters (whether attributed to disability\, race\, crime\, religion or sanity) typically underpins the drama. O’Connor’s novel\, Wise Blood was adapted to film and directed by John Huston. \nPlease register on our calendar and wear a mask in the community room.

SUMMARY:Five Steps to a Winning Novel
DESCRIPTION:Hosted in the North Valley Library Community Room. We all know the rules: Write what you know; show\, don’t tell\, etc. Great in theory\, so very vague in practice. In judging contests such as the 2019 Edgar Awards\, novelist Gwen Florio read hundreds of books\, a process that revealed some very specific things that made a few novels shoot to the top of the list while other\, perfectly well-written books\, faded in comparison. (It also gave her tremendous empathy for agents and editors facing the slush pile.) This workshop will focus on those key qualities\, with specific examples\, and advice and techniques on achieving them. \nPresenter Bio\nFlorio is an award-winning journalist and author. Her work includes the Lola Wicks mysteries and most recently\, Silent Hearts. She is the former news editor of the Missoulian.

DESCRIPTION:Join us in the North Valley Public Library.  Author Larry Watson introduces “The Lives of Edie Pritchard” with a virtual reading followed by a live Q & A session on Thursday\, November 19\, 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.  Set in Montana this story is getting great reviews.  “The story of a woman loved by twin brothers was born years ago\,” shares Larry. \n“A smart\, strong Montana woman struggles to define herself over decades as the men in her life try to control her. \nWatson’s novel is set against the rugged landscape of Montana\, the perfect backdrop for a story about a woman who spends her life running up against and away from mountains of male ego and desire.” Kirkus Review. \nLarry Watson’s novel “Let Him Go” was adapted to film\, soon to be released in November starring Kevin Costner. Several other novels have now been optioned for the film industry.    “Montana 1948” winner of Milkweed National Fiction Prize earned this soft spoken professor a loyal fan base. \nPlease join us in the community and watch Larry on the big screen or join us via Zoom.  You must register on the library’s calendar to receive the link.
