DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Friends of Fort Owen is sponsoring an evening lecture by Sally Thompson: “A Strange Story of John Owen and Father De Smet\, Spring 1859” on Thursday\, January 10 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the North Valley Public Library\, 208 Main Street\, Stevensville. Two contemporaries acting as an agent for the U.S. Government escorted “Indian chiefs” from the Bitterroots to Fort Vancouver in April 1859. Their conflicting records of the story provide some interesting details about life at that pivotal time in regional history\, while leaving some significant unanswered questions. Sally Thompson is a well-known scholar and author whose main interest for over 40 years has been working with the native tribes of the West. She is trained as an anthropologist\, has interviewed over 200 elders and educators from 37 tribes\, worked with Kootenai and Blackfeet elders on a book\, “People Before the Park\,” about their seasonal rounds through Glacier National Park\, and has published a recent article\, “John Owen’s Worst Trip\,” in the Spring 2018 issue of Montana\, Magazine of Western History. Greg is well known in the community for his excellent fly tying. He started fly fishing in 1974 in Southern California for warm water species. After numerous trips to the Sierras\, trout fishing soon became a favorite. Greg is a charter member of the FFB and has served as President of the Bitterroot Chapter of Trout Unlimited for the past three years. Greg will show members why Christmas Island is considered one of the top salt water flats fishing destinations in the world. The atoll surrounds a pristine lagoon with stunning beaches\, extensive bird life and a friendly Micronesian culture. Within the lagoon are bone fish and a variety of trevally species. Outside the lagoon there is outstanding Yellowfin Tuna and Wahoo fishing opportunities. Seeing this slide show is the next best thing to being there! SUMMARY:‘We the People’ Community Night
DESCRIPTION:A ‘We the People’ Community Night and Dress Rehearsal  will be held Thursday\, January 3 at 6 p.m. in the Stevensville High School Choir Room. Nineteen days after this dress rehearsal the We the People class will be heading to Helena to compete in the We the People State Competition. The dress rehearsal will help each unit become more prepared for the competition. Parents\, Stevensville School District staff and Stevensville community members are all welcome to attend. \nThis is the second year that the We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution has been integrated into the AP Government and Politics course. We the People gives students the opportunity to learn more about the history of America and the Constitution. Wes Wells\, the teacher of AP Government\, wanted to include this program because it was a challenging competition that would give an opportunity to Stevensville High School students to compete academically against other students from around Montana. Out of all the schools in the Bitterroot Valley\, Stevensville is the only school that offers this program. Last year’s We the People participants placed fifth in the State Competition. The school that takes first at this competition gets the opportunity to go to Washington D.C. to represent Montana for the national competition.

SUMMARY:Stevi Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:The 54th annual Stevensville Christmas Bird Count is scheduled for Saturday\, December 29. It’s a big area and organizers need all the help they can get. Experience is helpful\, but certainly not required. Field observers will meet at the Stevensville Ranger Station between 7:30 and 7:45 a.m. to form small teams and get area assignments. Birders who live in the Count Circle (anywhere within 7.5 miles of the Ranger Station) can opt to get up at their leisure and count the birds on their property. Both types of counters are critical to a successful count. You don’t have to spend all day counting birds\, any time you have is helpful. Bird counters on last year’s Stevi CBC found 13\,017 birds of 82 different species. There are always some interesting birds out there just waiting to be discovered\, so come and help find all the common and unusual birds hiding in our winter landscape.
