Bitterroot Baroque’s sister organization, Baroque Music Montana, based in Bozeman, is presenting a string quartet concert in Missoula on January 5, 2022.
Sara Levy’s Salon: Quartets of Mendelssohn and Bach will be performed January 5 at 7:30 pm at the UM Recital Hall, Missoula. Tickets $30/$5 students.
Join Baroque Music Montana’s international quartet cast in exploring the musical life of Sara Levy. Sara Levy was the favorite student of Johann Sebastian Bach’s son and Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn’s great aunt. A brilliant and history loving pianist, Sara Levy was at the center of Berlin’s musical life at the turn of the 19th century. This program includes selections from the Bach family including “Art of Fugue” paired with a fugue by young Bozeman composer Athena Carson, a French battle piece about the Napoleonic Wars written during the occupation of Berlin, and Felix Mendelssohn’s Op. 80 String Quartet composed in remembrance of his sister Fanny.
Pieces are performed on period instruments and historical bows by musicians in historic performance style, notable for a rarely heard lens towards Mendelssohn’s early romantic work.
Musicians are Davina Clarke & Carrie Krause, violin, Lindsey Strand Polyak, viola and Sarah Stone, cello.
