The Bitterroot Bucs had several close games at the Harold Jerde Memorial tournament in Lewistown, Montana, over the weekend. They came away a winner Saturday night after topping the hometown Lewistown Redbirds, 10-9.

Billy Hanna was the starting pitcher. He was relieved by Austin Nogle who came in to pitch in the fourth and got the win. Jeremy Johnson was the starting catcher and he was relieved by Shorty Leonard who came into the game in the fifth.

Justin Medlin was the Bucs' MVP for the game. He was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. He had the only hit for the Bucs in the fifth inning. The Bucs scored five runs in that inning to take the lead. Zach Blackstun was 2-for-2 with an RBI and two doubles. In the fourth inning, Coe Golden hit a double and Hanna hit and RBI double to give the Bucs momentum going into the fifth inning.

The Bucs lost to Wolf Point, 10-3, in an earlier game. Blackstun started the game on the mound. He was relieved by Tyler Lind in the 4th and Cody Rolshoven in the 5th. Riley Philips hit a solo home run in the second inning and was the Bucs’ MVP for the game. Nogle hit an RBI sacrifice fly.

The Bucs lost to Gallatin Valley in another close game, 7-6. Philips went six innings and struck out five batters. He walked four, had four hits and allowed two earned runs. Lind was 1-for-3 with a solo home run. Nogle was 1-for-3 and had a two-RBI single. Travis Fetchko had a double and scored twice.

The Bucs lost to the Billings Cardinals, 10-9. Jeremy Johnson was the starting pitcher. Tanner Cobbs came in to relive Johnson in the fifth. Leonard was the catcher. Austin Erhler was the MVP for the Bucs. He was 1-for-3 and made it to base all four times. He scored three runs and had an RBI. Hanna also made it to base four times and was 2-for-2. In the sixth inning, Blackstun hit a double that scored two. Dan Lockman had a two-run single.

The Bucs will host the Rasmussen Invitational Tournament in Florence. That tournament begins on July 2nd.

A swimmer’s ‘golden’ years

Age is always a factor for an athlete. The older one gets, the slower the body reacts and competition becomes a thing of the past. But for Stevensville swimmer Pat Hastings, age is a good thing. This master swimmer recently moved up an age bracket to the 75-80 year old bracket and now is a ‘young un.’ With this advancement, she is hoping to have the same sort of success she’s had in the past five years.

It just five years ago that Hastings was ‘discovered’ by Barbara Jackson, a master swimming coach at the Canyons Athletic Club in Hamilton. Jackson, who is a former Olympian herself, saw her swimming laps at the club and invited her to join the Master Swim Class. Jackson thought that Hastings had the stamina and drive to begin competitive swimming at the young age of 70. Hastings said Jackson worked with her on her strokes and swimming technique and helped her perfect her form.

Once she started competitive swimming, Hastings found her niche and rapidly began amassing medals and breaking records in the pool. She has competed in the Montana State Senior Games, the Big Sky State Games in Billings, the Huntsman World Senior Games in St. George, Utah, as well as competitions in Seattle, Portland and other spots around the Northwest. Her specialties are the backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle races at various distances.

A few weeks ago, Hastings was at the Montana Senior Olympics in Kalispell. She finished first in all the events she entered – the 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle, the 50-yard backstroke, and the 50-yard freestyle; and she set records in each of these events as well. She points out that this was before she ‘aged up’ so she was actually one of the oldest in her division.

Hastings credits several people with helping her maintain her competitive edge. Dr. Steve Smith, a chiropractor with an office up Kootenai Creek, helps with keeping her body in balance and advises what foods she should be eating to enhance her performance. Smith is also very strong in kinesiology which is a great help, according to Hastings.

Hastings’ husband of 20 years, Ed, is her ‘manager’. “He gets me where I need to be when I need to be there during meets,” says Hastings.

Hastings and her husband moved to Montana and found their ‘dream log home’ 20 years ago. She was raised in New Hampshire but has always loved the West. When she and Ed rediscovered each other after each having separate lives, they decided to make the move west.

When Hastings is not in the pool at the Canyons or at the Griz Pool in Missoula, she can be found bicycling, hiking, or canoeing around the area. She only swims a couple days a week because of the chlorine. She also does weight training and works out on exercise machines to help maintain her stamina and strength.

She has made many friends throughout the senior games competitions and said she looks forward to seeing them at the meets. But, if they are in her division, look out when the starter’s horn sounds, it’s every swimmer for herself then.

The Huntsman World Senior Games will be held October 4-16 in St. George and Hastings is already making plans to be there. Over 10,000 athletes will compete in events from swimming to track and field and archery. Hastings said the last time she was there, she came home with silver medals and she doesn’t want to repeat that. She feels she has a chance at bringing home the gold once again as the youngster in the division.

Hamilton Booster Club All-Sports Banquet held

On Friday, June 4, the annual Booster Club All-Sports Banquet took place at Hamilton High School. To start the evening off the Booster Club treated everyone to a steak dinner. After dinner a program was held to honor Hamilton High School student-athletes.

First Activities Director Darrell Holland introduced all the Hamilton coaches. Next the Extracurricular Achievers of the Week were announced. The Booster Club then awarded Maureen Palmersheim and Parker Richards with scholarships for being selected this year’s Booster Club Appreciation Award winners. The next award was the Booster Club Fan of the Year Award. This award went to Diane Weeks, a woman who has promoted Hamilton High activities for many years.

Next the induction ceremony for this year’s athletes to be placed on the Wall of Fame took place. This year there were 21 inductees: Paul Donaldson, Wes Sherman, Cody Sellers, Hans Fischer, Dace Moerkerke, Kelsey Brangoccio, Bry Gordon, Casey Shifflett, Kirtlin Jessop, Bob Huppert, Annie Schultz, Kelsi Almond, Misha Trotter, Cami Westfall, Andrew Dorn, Dillon Wood, and Jessica Bourne. The Hamilton High School Coach of the Year Award was presented to Don Faris for his outstanding leadership in both Girls/Boys Track and Field, and Girls Basketball. Jill Harmon was selected by the high school coaches as this year’s Jimmy Robbins Memorial Award winner as the outstanding student-athlete at Hamilton.

To close out the evening the Bronc and Lady Bronc of the Year awards were presented to Wes Sherman and Misha Trotter. To be selected for this award you must be a senior who has participated in many activities, who is very coachable, who has great work ethic in school, and who has a lot of school spirit, and has outstanding moral character.
