Horses to go to Willing Servants

By Michael Howell

In response to the outcry over their decision to place the three horses, now in County custody following the Heydon animal abuse convictions, into the hands of Willing Servants Inc., rather than the Bitter Root Humane Association, the commissioners held another hearing to gather additional public comment on the matter. However, after listening to a roomful of people expressing divided opinions on the issue, the Commissioners declined to change their decision. More...

2010 Montana Jr. Duck Stamp winner

Whitefish High School student Kathleen McGunagle was chosen last Wednesday, March 24 as the winner of the 2010 Montana Junior Duck Stamp Contest. Her oil painting of a Canada Goose entitled “At Water’s Edge” was chosen as the best of show in this year’s state competition which was judged at the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge. “The rare beauty of natural wildlife and nature itself is too valuable to be compromised; thus the preservation of our wetlands is crucial to the preservation of our world’s well-being,” wrote McGunagle as a subtitle to her painting. McGunagle’s painting will be entered in the national competition which will be judged on April 23 in Minneapolis.

Judges in this year’s Montana Junior Duck Stamp Contest were (from left to right): Area Wildlife Biologist for Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks Craig Jourdonnais, local artist Cynthia Fisher, retired physician Dr. Allen Meyers, Stevensville Postmaster Mary Smith, and Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge Director Tom Reed. There will be an award ceremony at the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge where all the winners in each age category from first place to honorable mention will receive recognition for their work.

Stevi to pass interim pot ban

By Michael Howell

At its last meeting on March 22, the Stevensville Town Council approved the wording of an Interim Zoning Ordinance that would prohibit the opening or operation of a medical marijuana establishment in town or within one mile of the town limits. If adopted following a public hearing, which is scheduled for April 12, the ordinance would become effective immediately and remain in effect for six months while the council considers permanent zoning regulations governing the establishments. The Interim Zoning Ordinance could be extended for up to one year. More...

Search and Rescue building purchase moves forward

By Michael Howell

The County has moved one step closer to purchasing a new building to house the Ravalli County Search and Rescue (RCSR) operation when the Commissioners agreed last week to sign a buy/sell agreement with Farmers State Bank for $600,000. More...

The landmark smokestack at “Riverside” in Hamilton will remain on the property being purchased by the county to be used as the new Search and Rescue facility, as long as it is structurally sound. The “R’s” at the top will have to come down. Michael Howell photo.

Hamilton Council corrects process

Hamilton Council rescinds motion dropping sewer lift fees at Stonegate Meadows- but only to do it right the next time

By Michael Howell

The Hamilton City Council voted unanimously, at its March 16 meeting, to rescind the resolution passed on February 16 that abolished the sewer lift station maintenance fees for homeowners in the Stonegate Meadows subdivision. The council did this, not because it wants to see the fees reinstated, but because it did not exactly follow the requirements in state law governing how to proceed with rate changes and needs to do it over again correctly.
