Is it a stream or a ditch?

Group hopes to help with equine euthanasia program

Dealing with a pet’s death can often be very difficult emotionally. When the pet is as big as a horse it can be very difficult economically as well. Willing Servants, a recently formed non-profit organization dedicated to offering care for, or finding suitable homes for, abused and abandoned horses or for horses whose owners, for whatever reason, find themselves unable to provide adequate care for their animals, is now expanding its services. The group is now offering end of life services for horses that are on their last legs, may need to be put down, and whose owners are not able to meet the cost. More...

Like the rest of us, horses do best when they have good food and water, companionship and ample space to exercise. But in these tough times, more and more people are unable to properly provide for their horses. Theresa Manzella, above with "Crackerjack," is the founder of Willing Servants, a local group formed to assist horse owners. Willing Servants is now offering help with euthanasia when absolutely necessary.


Gray wolf delisted in Montana

Deputy Secretary of the Interior Lynn Scarlett announced on January 14 the removal of the western Great Lakes population and portions of the northern Rocky Mountain population of gray wolves from protection under the Endangered Species Act. The success of gray wolf recovery efforts in these areas has contributed to expanding populations of wolves that no longer require the protection of the Act, according to Scarlett. However, gray wolves found within the borders of Wyoming will continue to be protected by the Act due to a lack of adequate regulatory mechanisms ensuring their protection under state law. More...


Airports awarded federal grants

Two Bitterroot Valley airports were recently awarded federal grants for airport improvements. The Ravalli County Airport has been awarded a $38,000 federal grant for improvement of its airport beacon. The Stevensville Airport was awarded a grant of $131,252 to install weather reporting equipment. More...
