Open Lands Board makes first recommendation

The Ravalli County Open Lands Board decided unanimously last Thursday, December 18, to make its first recommendation for use of funds from the county’s Open Lands bond program. The money will be used to cover part of the cost of placing a conservation easement on the historic Wood family ranch located north of Corvallis. Valley water tested for pesticides

As part of its Groundwater Protection Program, the Montana Department of Agriculture conducted tests this summer on 23 shallow groundwater wells and five surface water sites in the Bitterroot Valley. The water was tested for the presence of 95 different pesticides and also tested for the presence of nitrates. More...

It was 1924 when Billy Hoblitt’s dad asked blacksmith Johnny McGlaughlin to fashion him a brand. For the next fifty-six years, Hoblitt family horses and Herefords would sport Lone Stars on their cheeks and left hips. "People today think it’s cruel to brand horses," states Billy, "but my dad had a special method that made it relatively painless. He would place the hot iron on a piece of pork fat." Anyone who saw a horse with a little star on its cheek knew this animal came from the Lone Star Ranch where ninety-two-year-old Billy was born. More...
