The track season got off to a roaring start on Saturday at Corvallis at the annual Gene Hughes Invitational. Sixteen teams competed through rain and wind and sunshine with some impressive marks put on the board. Corvallis and Hamilton won first and second in both the boys and girls. Both teams are loaded and field 90 plus athletes.
Hamilton’s Annika Moore was a triple winner, breaking the tape first in the 100, and then winning both the long jump and the triple jump with a leap of 34 feet, unofficially the best in the state at this time. She is the defending state champion in that event.
Jane Booth of Corvallis won the high jump with a jump of 5’4”, just two inches shy of her state-winning jump last spring. The 5’4” jump is unofficially the best in the state right now. Booth also branched out and competed in the discus and the javelin, and finished sixth in those events.
Hamilton’s Cameron Meikle brought home two wins. He was two and half seconds faster than teammate Kole Tison in the 1,600 with a time of 4:39.90. Then, in the 3,200, he clocked a 10:21.80, almost seven seconds faster than Tison who was in second place. Both times are listed as the best in the state right now. Another Bronc, Karill Apedaile, brought home wins in the 400 and the 800. His time in the 800, 2:02.40, is leading the state unofficially right now.
Jesse Sims put the mark to beat out there with a shot put throw of 52’9”, seven feet farther than second place. Sims also won the discus and placed in the 100-meter race. Taylor Sylvester won the 200 and the 110 hurdles. His time in the 200 is currently the fastest listed in the state.
