Stevensville – Joe Burgett, 81, of Stevensville passed away Monday, December 29, 2014 at the Living Centre in Stevensville. Joe was born July 15, 1933 in Cortland, NY, the son of Arden and Marion Burgett.
Joe served in the US Coast Guard from November of 1951 to May of 1954 and then in the Coast Guard Reserves until November of 1959. He married Martha Hazzard on August 17, 1952. They had four sons and one daughter. In 1971, they moved to Stevensville where Joe farmed and hauled livestock.
Joe was a member of the Homer Masonic Lodge for 50 years and lifetime member of the Homer Fire Department in Homer, NY. He was also a member of the Stevensville Etna Fire Department.
Joe was preceded in death by one son, Art; and sisters, Phyllis Cooper and Ardena Williams. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Martha, of Stevensville; sons, Don (Jill) of Oregon, Steve (Donna) and Gary (Kerry) of Stevensville; daughter, Carol (Allen) Teets of West Virginia; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Gloria (Bill) Webster and Janet Carpenter.
Services were held on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at Whitesitt Funeral Home. The family suggests that memorials be made in Joe’s name to the Stevensville Fire Dept., PO Box 193 or to the Stevensville Masonic Lodge, 300 Church St., Stevensville MT 59870.
