BPL Fellowship Club
The Bitterroot Public Library’s Fellowship Club will be meeting on Thursday, September 11 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. to discuss “The Game of Life and How to Play It” by Florence Scovel Shinn.
This work is considered as the world’s most celebrated ‘success’ book and guide on how to ‘win’ in life through positive attitudes and affirmations.
First published in 1925, this book has inspired thousands of people around the world to find a sense of purpose and belonging. It asserts that life is not a battle but a game of giving and receiving, and that whatever we send out into the world will eventually be returned to us. This little book can help us discover how our mind and its imaging faculties play leading roles in the game of life. Schinn shows how, to train the imagination successfully, man must understand the workings of the mind, and thereby put into practice what the Greeks meant when they said: “Know Thyself.”
Florence Scovel Shinn was a widely known artist and illustrator, metaphysician, and lecturer. She had the ability to explain her success principles and how they work in an entertaining and easy-to-read style. She illustrates through real-life stories how, through a knowledge of spiritual law, one can focus clearly on one’s good, eliminate all mental pictures of evil, and invariably become a ‘winner’ in life – able to control life’s conditions and release abundance.
The Fellowship Club meets every second Thursday of the month in the West Meeting Room of the Bitterroot Public Library and is free and open to anyone seeking to promote individual and collective well being.

First-time Homebuyer Class
The Bitter Root RC&D will hold a nationally-certified First-Time Homebuyer Group Education class on Saturday, September 13 from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., at Bitterroot Valley Board of Realtors, 224 N. 4th Street, Hamilton. Attendance the full day is required for certification. The charge is $50 per household to cover instruction and the cost of reference materials.
The class is presented by Sara Ann Briggs, who is certified in three areas of housing counseling from the NeighborWorks Center for Homeownership Education and Counseling: Pre-purchase group education; One-on-one counseling, and Post-purchase group education. The Bitter Root RC&D can now offer new programs to the residents of Ravalli County, including the required follow-up counseling for eHome participants.
The time couldn’t be better to purchase a home because interest rates remain low and housing stock in the area is abundant. The first step to the home-buying process is pre-purchase counseling. Certification is required in order to qualify for many loans (MBOH, Rural Development, FHA, etc.). Most lenders require that anyone on the loan must take the course. Additionally, HUD requires that the class be taken prior to signing a purchase contract; therefore, Briggs urges first-time homebuyers to not wait until the last minute to take the class. Offered will be up-to-date information on Rural Direct Loans and HRC Down Payment Assistance Deferred Payment loans.
The class will help novice homebuyers maneuver through the entire process of homeownership. Attendance entitles participants to free individual financial counseling and post-purchase counseling.
Call the Bitter Root RC&D office at 363-5450 to reserve your space today with your $50 deposit. Bitter Root RC&D accepts MasterCard and VISA, checks and cash. Payment in full is required by September 4 to confirm your reservation. The office is located at 1709 N. 1st Street in Hamilton.

Forest Moon Walks
Once a month, as the full moon glows, it seems safe to venture out into the dark while the moon makes magnificent shadows across the landscape. You can still smell the wildflowers, feel the wind blowing through the trees, hear the water running through the creek bed, and sense the bustling nocturnal life.
For the 14th year, the Bitterroot National Forest and Bitter Root RC&D presents a series of interpretive Moon Walks from June to October. These free, educational walks are based on the book “Walk When the Moon is Full”, by Francis Hammerstrom about her children and the nature walks they took every month under the full moon.
You are invited to join interpreters and naturalists for the 2014 series. The presentations begin at 7 p.m. on the Saturday closest to the official full moon and last approximately 1-2 hours. Presenters include foresters, biologists, scientists, historians, poets, storytellers, and everything under the sun, or in this case – moon. Dress in layers because the weather in the Forest is often different than it is in town. Guests are also encouraged to bring a lawn chair, and a jacket.
The next Moon Walks are:
Saturday, September 13 – Photography Moon at Blodgett Overlook Trail in Hamilton. Photographs make some of the best memories from our journeys outside. Bring your camera and tripod and join a few local Bitterroot photographers on a hike up Blodgett Overlook to learn how to take your photos up a notch, specifically focused on outdoor photography. Capture the perfect landscape, colorful sunrise, hiking trail, wildflower, or star-filled sky.
Saturday, October 25 – Ghost Moon at Wood’s Cabin at Lake Como near Darby. Enjoy ghost stories at the historic Wood’s Cabin on the shores of Lake Como. Meet historic Bitterroot Valley ghosts and hear stories of their lives and some of their untimely deaths. Costumes encouraged!
