The Corvallis girls’ track team brought home the gold from the Class A state championship meet on Saturday. Senior Paige Squire led the way with three wins and three new state records. Adding to the medal were a pair of freshmen, Sadi Henderson and Ayden Eickoff, who won the 400 and 1,600 meter races respectively. Corvallis finished with 103 points, 25 points ahead of second place Whitefish. Hamilton finished in fifth place with 37 points and Stevensville had 14 points.
Squire, who has dominated the hurdles and the 200 meter races this year, left her mark in the record books. She set a record of 14.47 in the 100 hurdles in the trials. Her time of 14.72 in the finals was still almost three tenths of a second faster than second place Lakyn Connors who is also from Corvallis. Squire set a new record in the 300 hurdles with a time of 43.76. Squire’s final record and win came in the 200 where she set the record in Friday’s time trials. That mark was 24.83. Her time in the finals was 25.37.
Eickoff won the 1,600 with a time of 5:13.55. She was third in the 800. Henderson was first in the 400 with a time of 56.91. Henderson was sixth in the 100 meter race.
Henderson, Eickoff, Connors and Squire teamed together in the 4×400 relay to set another Class A record. These speedsters were the first Class A relay girls’ team to break the four minute mark with a time of 3:57.16. The four also won the 4×100 relay with a time of 49.44.
Several others added to the point total for the Blue Devils. Connors was fifth in the triple jump. Carlie Jessop was fifth in the discus. Aspen Evans took fourth in the pole vaulting. Kaycie Stewart was fifth in the 3,200 meter race.
Hamilton’s Kelsi Almond finished second in the 100 with a time of 12.71 and second in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 10 ½ inches. She was sixth in the 400. Kelsey Brangoccio was fifth in the logn jump, breaking the 16 foot mark for the first time with a leap of 16 feet, ¾ inch. Meghan Kratofil was fourth in the discus with 115 feet, five inche. Camie Westfall was third in the pole vault.
Stevensville’s Molly Brewer took second in the high jump with a 5 feet, 4 inch leap. Brittany Chilcott had a personal best in the javelin with a throw of 120 feet, 2 inches. Alycia Sims finished fifth in the shot put.
The Corvallis boys finished second behind Columbia Falls. Chris Jessop and Logan Connors were the only event winners for the Blue Devils. Jessop won the 3,200 with a time of 9:42.16, seven seconds faster than second place. Jessop wasa second in the 1,600 behind Columbia Falls’ Derrick Williams and fourth in the 800.
Connors threw the javelin 185 feet, 6 inches, in a very tight event. Teammate Stuart Landis finished in third with his best effort of the season, 180 feet, 11 inches. Raymond Jessop finished fourth with 170 feet 9 inches to round out the Blue Devil scoring in the javelin.
Colby Henderson took second in the 800 behind Columbia Falls’ Williams. Henderson, who is Sadi Henderson’s older brother, took fourth in the 400 and third in the 1,600. Other Corvallis athletes who placed were: Chase Stoker, fifth in the 3,200; Jimmy Henderson, fifth in the discus; Branden Butt, sixth in the discus; Tyler Berner, third in the pole vault.
Josh Lords led the scoring for the Yellowjackets. He finished third in the 200 and sixth in the 100 meter sprint. Austin Christopher was second in the 110 hurdles. Josh Haynes finished third in the long jump.
Hamilton’s Seth Ray finished sixth in the javelin with a throw of 168 feet, 4 inches.
