Market needs our help

June 5, 2012 by Editor

It’s Saturday morning, what to do? Hmmm…

I find myself once again at our Stevi Farmers Arts & Crafts Market. I represent Sweetbottom Design Studio, a group of valley residents. There are other loyal local vendors here. Granted, today is cool and grey; however, an empty look prevails. But, hey, where have all the people gone?

Once upon a time, this was a thriving, busy community weekend gathering with music, good friends and tourists alike – a lot of fun!

We have sewing crafts, metal art, baking, produce and plants, a turquoise and silver jewelry designer, Native American gifts and jewelry, unique hair barrettes, and pet accessories. We are here, with local handmade ideas to share. But where, oh, where, are more of our talented community artists? Perhaps a rotating taste sampling of a local food vendor? and coffee?

I ask of our cozy community, let’s get together! C’mon, vendors, old and new, let’s get behind our historically famous “ol’ Montana town” and grow this market to better than ever!

I first became aware of Farmer’s Market when I lived in Missoula during the early 80’s. The abundance and variety of produce from area farmers was amazing and the social experience was great as well. The Stevi Farmer’s Market seems much more about an opportunity for arts & crafts. I believe there would be much more interest if our local market had more in the way of what farmers offer vs. crafts, you’d see much more in the way of activity and interest.
