The #2 Florence Falcons (406 MT Sports football rankings) defeated the #5 Fairfield Eagles 34-33 on Friday, September 11, in Fairfield. As you would suspect from a game between two of the top teams in the state, the outcome wasn’t decided until the end of the fourth quarter.
Florence led 34-20 late in the game, then Fairfield scored twice in the fourth quarter. Their second touchdown came with under a minute to play in the game, and Florence led 34-33. Fairfield looked to kick a PAT to tie the game, but the holder took the snap and threw an incomplete pass, and Florence held on for the 34-33 victory.
Florence senior quarterback Jake Schneiter had another big game. Schneiter completed 18 of 25 passes for 275 yards and threw four touchdowns; he also rushed for 69 yards and a touchdown. On defense, Schneiter led the Falcons with 12 total tackles and a sack.
Florence running back Luca Caldarone had 13 carries for 95 yards, and had five receptions for 81 yards and a touchdown. Florence receivers Makoah Laasch, Brennan Meinhold, and Landon Sirevaag each had a touchdown reception. On defense, Florence’s Christian Englund had 11 total tackles and a sack.
This was the third straight week that Florence has played a top-five Class B team. They lost to #2 Three Forks 28-34 in their first game, then defeated #1 Manhattan 33-20 in their second game, and now they defeated #5 Fairfield.
Florence’s grueling non-conference schedule continues this week as they host defending Class A State Champion Frenchtown on Friday, September 18. Class A #1 Frenchtown was ranked #1 in Class A before they lost 17-21 in their last game to #2 Billings Central.
