Bitterroot Moment – “my second year in 4H…”

August 26, 2026 by Editor Leave a Comment

Seeley, Helena and Emmitt Phelps visited the Bitterroot Star in their quest across the county. Along with many other 4H participants, the youth are out, roaming the valley, talking to individuals and businesses about what they have been doing over the last year. They talk about their trials and tribulations raising animals for the eventual livestock sale on Saturday, Sept. 5.

According to Seeley, a 10-year-old 4H member, “This is my second year in 4H and my second year raising a lamb.” For Helena, 11 years old, her favorite part of her lamb is its rump, and she noted that her greatest lesson this year has been “health and wellness of animal stewardship. For Emmitt, a 13-year-old 4H member, it will be his fourth year. He is also doing a market lamb, and said, “I set my goals higher this year and aimed for Grand Champion Market Lamb.”

4H participants rely on community support for their projects. The lessons they learn along the way shape them for the rest of their lives, and not only make them better farmers and ranchers, but better people as well.

Every valley has its stories. Some are found in history books. Others are tucked away in family photo albums, remembered around kitchen tables or shared over coffee with neighbors.

We’re creating a place to celebrate all the little things that make life in the Bitterroot different from anywhere else. Tell us about a favorite childhood experience, little-known Bitterroot history, a business you miss, a lesson you learned, a family tradition or a favorite fishing hole (if you’re willing to share).

We welcome stories, memories, photographs, poems, artwork, observations, local legends, advice, humorous moments and reflections. Whether you’ve lived here for generations or just arrived, we’d love to hear your perspective.

No story is too small. Often it’s the little moments that best capture what it means to call the Bitterroot Valley home.

Send your submissions to Sarah Glass at sarah@mullennewspapers.com or drop them off at our office. Please include your name, town of residence and make sure any photos you share with us are your own. We may edit for length or clarity while preserving your voice.
