My wife and I recently heard from a friend of ours that was traveling around Pennsylvania and New Jersey and spent over $100 a day going through highway toll booths. We had same experience a while back traveling near Chicago.
It came to me that, instead of imposing a sales tax on the residents of Montana (which is inevitable seeing as how Washington is withholding federal tax dollars from our state), we charge an exit toll for anyone leaving the state. Anyone can come into the state, but must pay $5 or $10 per vehicle to get out. Over the road trucks (18 wheelers) passing through the state (especially trucks from Canada that fuel up in Canada and never stop) should pay $15 to $20. Montana residents that want to leave the state to shop should also pay.
Our population is around 1 million normally, but around 6 million during the summer and ski season. Figure it out.
