I was so disappointed in the pathetic little blurb printed January 23rd on the turkeys. I had contacted the Star via phone 10 days prior with information from our local biologists Rebecca Maurey, none of which was printed. I was amazed that the person whom I spoke with had no idea of the situation since it’s been an ongoing problem for a long time. I guess they are staying on the east side of Main Street.
Turkeys do not relocate well at all, they generally return within a few days. Although it is not illegal to feed them it’s not a good idea to feed any wild animal. Within seven weeks the flock grew from 9 to 38 and I have a picture of all 38 right by my house. They have become so tame it’s hard to even scare them off. It won’t be long and it will be breeding season and the toms become extremely aggressive. If you’ve ever been attacked by a rooster think about one weighing in at 30 pounds!
I live three blocks east of Main, and on a daily basis I have to defend my beautiful covered deck and furniture from the huge messes they leave. There are very few places on this side of town where you can walk down the sidewalks without stepping in turkey crap. I think if this huge flock of turkeys were strutting up and down the sidewalks in front of the businesses on Main Street it wouldn’t be taken so nonchalantly.
I’m asking everyone, PLEASE, PLEASE, don’t feed the turkeys. They’re a wild animal, let’s let them be wild.
