Golden Age cleanup day
The Golden Age Club in Hamilton will hold its monthly business meeting on Wednesday, August 5. The club will conduct a general indoor and outdoor cleanup session prior to the meeting. All members are asked to turn out at the hall at 9 a.m. to do a thorough cleanup inside the hall, with attention to kitchen
appliances, the card table tops and other indoor areas. The outside grounds need weed eating and raking. If you have yard tools, bring them. A weed eater or two and maybe a lawn mower would help. At noon the clean up will end and a light lunch will be served. The business meeting will begin at 1 p.m. Members are urged to attend the meeting to take part in completing plans for the summer potluck picnic and dance which is scheduled for August 16. Also on the agenda will be discussion of a possible change of one item in club by-laws. Getting some additional volunteer help with the card games will be talked about. There will be time for other items of interest from the members in attendance to be discussed.
Stevi Main Street Assn.
The Stevensville Main Street Association will hold its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, August 5 at 12 noon at the Main Street office, 100B Main. Mayor Gene Mim Mack will be the guest speaker, providing information and answering questions about the Town of Stevensville. Lunch is $6 per person. Call 777-3773 for more information.
Stevensville Garden Club
The Stevensville Garden Club meets the first Wednesday of each month at 1 p.m. at the Community Baptist Church, 409 Buck Street, Stevensville. Everyone is welcome. The next meeting will be August 5, with Judi Vannatta speaking on “Exploring Tomatoes.” Come and listen to Judi, then participate in the “tomato tasting” contest and/or make a dish using tomatoes! Library celebration
Celebrate a summer of reading by playing water games at the Bitterroot Public Library on Wednesday, August 5 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. on the lawn. Tiny tot pool play, boat making, boat races, art and games, and water balloons! Enjoy snacks and refreshments. It’s free and open to the public. Spirituality video series
Spiritual Master Video Series will feature Rev. Michael Beckwith presenting “The Answer is You” on Wednesday, August 5 at 6:30 p.m. at the Center for Spiritual Living, 1720 N.1st Street, Hamilton (north of Sears). Visionary teacher Michael Bernard Beckwith delves deep into practical methods for manifesting prosperity and health, living a rich and fulfilling life, understanding universal laws and gaining greater self-awareness, courage, and self-reliance. The Reverend Beckwith is the founder of the Agape International Spiritual Center located in Culver City, California.

Blood Drive
The American Red Cross strives to collect over 700 pints of blood to meet the needs of patients in this area alone. In the Montana service area every 27 minutes someone needs blood. Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital (MDMH) helps the American Red Cross meet this need by sponsoring blood drives four times a year. The blood drive is on Thursday, August 6 from 11 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. in the hospital conference rooms B/C. To schedule your blood drive appointment, call Gary Schulz at 375-4451. Donors, remember to bring your identification with you and prior to donating blood eat complete meals, avoid caffeinated beverages, and drink plenty of water. Cardboard challenge
A Cardboard Challenge Fair will be held Thursday, August 6 from 4:40 to 6 p.m. at Bitterroot Public Library on the lawn and in the meeting room. Bring your cardboard creation to the Bitterroot Public Library and enjoy what other people have created this summer. If you need ideas, the library has them! Call the library at 363-1670.
Sports Physical Program
All male and female valley athletes in middle and high school are invited to the Marcus Daly Rehabilitation Center on Thursday, August 6 or Wednesday, August 12 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. for the annual sports physical program. Over the past nine years, this program sponsored by Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital and Medical Providers raised over $70,000 for the valley’s school athletic programs. The cost is $25 per student and 100% of the proceeds will be donated back to the students’ school athletic program. Cash or check only, payment is due at the time of visit, no refunds. Please enter the Marcus Daly Rehabilitation Center through the main entrance, located on the southwest end of Westwood Drive.
All participants must have a sports physical form. They are available at doctor’s offices or coaches; or online at www.mdmh.org. Parents must fill out & sign the sports physical form and accompany their child at the examination. The physical includes height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, vision, evaluations for posture, joints, strength, flexibility, heart, lungs, abdomen, ears, nose, and throat. Immunization clinic
The staff at Ravalli County Public Health is teaming up with clinicians at Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital to help the parents of local school kids get ready for school. While the hospital is hosting its annual Sport Physical Clinics on August 6 and 12 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., the Health Department will open its doors to provide any immunizations that students may need to meet school requirements. This year is the first year that students in grades k-12 will need to be immunized against varicella (chicken pox), in addition to all previously required vaccines. Students in grades 7-12 who received a Td (tetanus/diphtheria) upon entering 7th grade will need to get a booster Tdap (tetanus/ diphtheria/pertussis) for pertussis coverage. The new law also gives parents the option of providing documentation of varicella disease or lab confirmation of vaccination or disease from the child’s health care provider, and the rules regarding exemptions are unchanged. A representative from the health department will be at the Sports Physical Clinic to answer questions about all vaccine requirements, and to direct parents and their children to the immunization clinic at 205 Bedford Street, Hamilton. Band concert
Bitterroot Community Band will present a concert on Thursday, August 6 at 8 p.m. at the bandshell in Claudia Driscoll Park in Hamilton. Listen to the band’s renditions of classical, Broadway, marches and movie music. Free and open to the public.

Outdoorswoman workshop
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks’ popular Becoming an Outdoors-Woman summer workshop is set for Aug. 7-9 at Lubrecht Forest, east of Missoula. Registration is now open and women are encouraged to sign up with a friend to learn a new activity or improve existing skills. Participants choose four classes from a variety of topics including basic gun handling, rifle and shotgun training, fishing, map and compass reading, kayaking, butterfly and bird identification, outdoor survival, using a GoPro camera and more. Anyone 18 years of age or older may participate. The fee ranges between $170–$290 and includes class instruction, meals and lodging. Darby Golf Scramble
The 4th Annual Darby Booster Club will host their golf scramble on Friday, August 7 at the Hamilton Golf Course. Teams are comprised of four players each. Cost is $65 for non-members and $45 for members. Each player will receive a lunch, t-shirt and 18 holes of golf. Golf carts and range balls are available for a charge. North Valley Pachyderm Club

Sapphire Lutheran Homes celebration
Sapphire Lutheran Homes, Inc. will celebrate its 25th Anniversary on Friday, August 7 from 3 to 6 p.m. with beverages and hors d’oeuvres. Take a tour of the campus at 501 N. 10th Street in Hamilton and then enjoy a free concert. Mac & Cheeb is the opening act at 6 p.m. with a barbecue for $5 followed by Jenn Adams at 7 p.m. Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy a relaxing summer evening at Sapphire Lutheran Homes. There will also be free ice cream and a special raffle. Funds raised will go toward a handicapped accessible bus for the residents.
Riverfest Days
Riverfest Days, hosted by the Bitter Root Water Forum (BRWF), will be held Friday and Saturday, August 7 and 8, at River Park in Hamilton. With a 5K run/walk, a river clean up, and a festival, there is something for everyone!
Riverfest Days takes off running at 7 p.m. on Friday, August 7 with the third annual 5K Run for the River. For a $27 entry fee participants get a t-shirt, a free beer or ice cream sandwich at the finish line, and a chance to win great prizes. The run starts in River Park and traces through Hamilton and the recently dedicated Steve Powell Park to finish in River Park. Register on site from 6 to 6:30 p.m.
Saturday morning, August 8, volunteers will scour the Bitterroot River for trash from Sula to Missoula. The Bitterroot River Clean Up has a long history in the valley, and each year hundreds of volunteers help pull more than 1000 pounds of trash out of the river. Interested volunteers can call 375-2272 or visit brwaterforum.org to sign up for a stretch of river. Trash can be dropped off after 3 p.m. at Kiwanis River Park in Hamilton. Volunteers will get a free meal from Bye N Bye Chuck Wagon as a thank you.
Saturday afternoon into the evening is Riverfest in the ‘Root. Now in its fifth year, this summertime staple takes place from 2 until 7:30 p.m. in River Park in Hamilton. This event is both a celebration of the Bitterroot River and a chance to learn more about the Bitterroot Watershed. There will be local art vendors, face painting, a fly casting clinic, a live animal show, a bouncy house, and more. Come out to enjoy some good music performed by Joan Zen, good food from Chuck Wagon, good beer from Bitterroot Brewery, and good company with your friends at BRWF!
BRWF started Riverfest in the Root in 2011 to provide a free opportunity for community members of all ages to learn more about the importance of our water resources in the Bitterroot Valley. Other local organizations will also be at Riverfest in the Root to answer questions and provide information in a fun and engaging way.
Hamilton First Friday
The Hamilton Downtown Association will celebrate the “Dog Days” of August this Friday, Augurst 7, with their monthly downtown event. Many businesses will be open extended hours, and from 5 to 8 p.m. vendors will occupy small “parklets” downtown, offering lemonade, shaved ice, caramel corn, and more substantial treats. “Dog Days” refers to the heat of August, but some stores will also offer dog owners special treats, and water bowls to keep pets cool. Live music, art displays, in-store specials, and refreshments will greet shoppers in many businesses. The HDA encourages residents and visitors alike to stroll and browse Hamilton’s unique downtown businesses, and to stay for dinner or a beverage in one of Hamilton’s many dining and drinking establishments. Pancake breakfast
In conjunction with the annual Creamery Picnic festivities, the Stevensville Masonic Lodge will hold its annual pancake breakfast on Saturday, August 8 from 7 to 11 a.m. at the lodge at 3rd and Church St., Stevensville (one block east of Main). All Brothers, Sisters, Sojourners and the public are invited for eggs, bacon, pancakes and beverages. Cost is $7 for adults and $3 for children. Proceeds assist the Florence and Stevensville Schools’ junior achievement programs, and the “Bikes for Books” programs at Lone Rock and Stevensville Schools.
Salish program
Montana State Parks (stateparks.mt.gov) is hosting “Seasons of the Salish” at Travelers’ Rest State Park on Saturday, August 8 at 11 a.m.
“Seasons of the Salish” is a program that focuses on the seasonal round, or travel pattern, of the Bitterroot Salish Native Americans. Part of their homeland is through where Travelers’ Rest State Park is located today. Participants will have the chance to learn what activities were done in which seasons and some of the most important aspects of the landscape. This program is also part of the Trekker Kids series and is open to kids in 2nd through 6th grade. Trekker Kids is a series of activities and programs for kids and families that celebrate the outdoors of western Montana and the rich history of the Travelers’ Rest site. Regular programs are held on Saturdays at 11 a.m. unless otherwise posted. The cost will go to support further Trekker Kids programs. Dr. Bill Spath, 2015-16 District Governor for Montana Rotary District 5390, will be speaking at the next meeting of the Hamilton Rotary Club, on Monday, August 10 at 12 noon at BJ’s Restaurant, 900 N. 1st Street, Hamilton. Dr. Spath joined the faculty of Montana Tech of the University of Montana in 1986. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in Applied Health Science, Occupational Safety, Health and Industrial Hygiene. Dr. Spath is a tenured, full Professor, and is the Applied Health Science program coordinator and HPER program manager at Valley Community College in St. Louis, MO. The meeting is open to the public. RASS training
Western MT Addiction Services Prevention is holding a Responsible Alcohol Sales and Service training on Tuesday, August 11 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at 209 N. 10th Street, Suite C in Hamilton. The cost of the training is $15 for materials. The “Let’s Control It” course teaches participants to recognize and prevent intoxication in others. Program participants are trained by certified instructors to detect the signs of intoxication and intervene effectively to prevent any alcohol-related problems. The course also teaches participants how to identify underage persons to help limit the access to alcohol. The “Let’s Control It” curriculum is approved by the MT Dept of Revenue and participants will receive a certificate of completion fulfilling the state mandate for training.
