Trump and Musk are blaming federal workers for our bloated federal government budgets. Facts tell a different story. According to the U.S. Bureau of Statistics, there were 3 million federal employees in 1970. That number crept up slightly in the 1990s and then returned to 3 million in 2024.
Population growth easily outpaced the number of federal jobs. According to the U.S.Census Bureau, in 1970, 203.4 million people lived in the United States. However, our population steadily rose to 341.5 million or a whopping 61.8 percent in growth by 2024.
Our undeterred dedicated federal employees kept up with this population surge by finding and implementing creative ways to use constantly improving computer technology to efficiently get their work done.
