The Bitterroot River Protection Association (BRPA) will hold its annual meeting on Thursday, September 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Bedford Building (upstairs) in Hamilton. The guest speaker will be Brandy Langum, program manager for the Bitterroot National Forest’s Fisheries and Watershed Program. Langum will give a presentation on the activities and plans of the recently formed BNF Aquatic Team.
Additional speakers will give brief presentations on the Bitterroot River Health Check program. Since 2018, volunteers have been monitoring the Bitterroot River and its tributaries, collecting data such as nutrient levels, water flows and temperatures. The monitoring program includes six sites along the river from the West Fork south of Darby to the Buckhouse Bridge at the edge of Missoula, as well as 11 sites on six Bitterroot tributaries. The program partners with other agencies such as the Montana Department of Environmental Quality and the Bitterroot National Forest, helping to gather critical information about the health of Bitterroot waterways.
At the meeting, information will be shared with the public about the progress of the Bitterroot Health Check Program, which is an all-volunteer “citizen science” program, what the future plans are, and how to get involved.
