Well done, Victoria!

The Mullens who own four local newspapers (including the Star)  could never have picked a better candidate for Publisher of their local newspapers. I write this short note to recognize your long history of service to the community that matters most to me, our Bitterroot valley.

I came to the valley in 1975. Back then you were running a deli in Hamilton and rooting for Jimmy Carter for president.

Our politics have always been at odds. I have often spoken out and written on political issues. You have never let that affect your work on the Bitterroot Star. Unlike some other local papers, you and your husband have always given the opposite views a fair hearing.

I remember how your paper handled the long drawn out issue of access to the Mitchell Slough. Finally, the rich landowners had to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal costs when they lost the access issues. It was a day of celebration for anyone trying to exercise the right to river access. Yes! the Star led the way in saving our river access rights. All fishermen are in your debt.

I should also mention your support of the American Legion school essay and speech contests concerning the US Constitution. Your fair and accurate coverage of Justice Court news was also worthy of praise and recognition

Victoria, you  have served this community in a manner deserving recognition. Your service has been outstanding and it continued throughout decades of rapid change in our beautiful valley. I wish you well as you continue such service in your new position.

Yes, Victoria, thank God, the beat goes on.
