Rabbit issues

April 6, 2022 by Guest Post

by Ginny Massey, Hamilton

Yes, bunnies are cute, however…

At one point during the fall, I stood in front of my house on the north side of Hamilton and counted 15 rabbits in my neighbors’ and my front yards. Yes, some were eating dried grass, but others were digging in the flower beds…eating bulbs and digging up perennials. I have lost most of the perennial flowers in my front yard to these rodents and there are holes in the front and back lawns, not to mention a covering of rabbit poop. Several times I had to fill in tunnels the rabbits dug next to my house foundation.

There is a huge population of rabbits roaming all around the neighborhood being very destructive. This is a problem in our town that needs to be addressed.

If live traps were set out, I wonder whether local vet clinics would be willing to offer affordable spay/neuter services? Wouldn’t fix the problem immediately but if implemented at a certain scale it would eventually get the situation under control. Seems like that would be more palatable to many residents than some of the more direct solutions I’ve heard being discussed.
