One of the 2022 Olympic sites in China is not in fact a nuclear plant – it is a former steel mill site. Big Air Shougang is built on the site of a former steelworks factory that once employed 200,000. The factory was decommissioned prior to the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics and the cooling towers are converted and reused. All venues at the 2022 Olympics are powered by renewable energy (solar and wind) as primary energy sources from the Zhangjiakou Renewable Energy Zone in Hebei province, next to Beijing.
