The Stevensville Sabres Soccer Organization enjoyed a bit or success this past weekend at the State Soccer Tournament in Great Falls. Stevensville Sabres entered four teams in the Tournament.
Two teams (U18 Boys and U14 Boys Team) reached the Championship Game. In the Championship Game against Helena, the U18 Boys in a well-fought battle lost to Helena (Queen City) 1-2.
The U14 Boys Team defeated Montana Rush (Great Falls) in a penalty shootout. Montana Rush scored first. Stevensville countered with three unanswered goals. Montana Rush evened the score in regulation time with two goals of their own to bring the score to 3-3. A “Penalty Shoot Out” was used to determine the winner. Stevensville missed its first Penalty Shot and fell behind 0-1. The initial miss was the only miss for Stevensville in the Penalty Shoot Out. Stevensville Sabres won the Penalty Shoot Out 4-2, giving the team the State Title in the U-14 Boys’ Division.
Winning the State Title was huge for Stevensville. It was like David and Goliath all over again… little Stevensville against mighty Great Falls. Every player gave his all in the quest for the State Title. Yet, if one had to point to one individual player who stood above the norm, one would have to give special credit to the goalkeeper, Lane Cochran. He was outstanding.
