Scare-Words

September 15, 2020 by Guest Post

By Mary Fahnestock-Thomas, Hamilton

A recent letter in the Star took issue with some earlier letters that have called all Democrats evil — communists, socialists, “murderers, thieves,” to which apparently some now add pedophiles, satanists, and cannibals. Wow!

Such name-calling is not new or surprising, however. Since the Russian Revolution (1917-1923), if not since the French Revolution (1789), unscrupulous Americans in power have sought to make a boogy-man of anyone whose thoughts or actions seemed to threaten their power and wealth.

Used for effect rather than information, such words lose their meaning — even get hopelessly confused and confusing. After World War II, Americans were encouraged to regard as “communist” or “socialist” anyone who didn’t hate and fear the Soviet Union — under Russia — and now Russia seems to practically sponsor the Republican Party, and its head-of-state and ours are best buddies.

QAnon apparently thinks the old buzzwords have lost their punch, so they’ve come up with some new ones to apply to non-Republicans. Again, wow! Are you really going to fall for this stuff?

If the current administration could make things better in a second term, why don’t they start now? Apparently, they’d rather spend their time and money trying to sucker you in.

For all our sakes, please vote your thinking mind, not your party!
