Editor – do your job!

August 25, 2020 by Guest Post

By Daniel Rogers, Hamilton

Why do you publish opinion letters that are so obviously false? Do some research before publishing this nonsense. You recently published a rant by someone who opposed masks, ostensibly because they captured CO2 thus inhibiting O2 intake by the mask wearer. This is completely false! The respiratory droplets captured by mask are thousands of times larger than the gas molecules that we inhale. Are the masks uncomfortable and annoying, yes – but not dangerous to your health. Unless the BS wants to become a social media outlet, I suggest that you make some editorial decisions before publishing the ranting of some of your delusional readers.

    Covid! What a rant!!

Why do you think they call it Opinion? That’s exactly what Letters to the Editor are supposed to express: the personal opinion of the person who wrote them. This is why your’s can be included in the category. It is your opinion and it doesn’t have to be backed up with anything which can be proven true or false.

It is not the responsibility of the Editor to “fact-check” these and censor the ones deemed unworthy. He/she only has to make sure the letters meet the criteria of the paper, which is probably something as simple as avoiding libel (perhaps slander) and to make sure the language is fit for the community it serves.

Personally, I think the editor at the Bitterroot Star is doing the work a good editor does. I commend the paper for allowing and encouraging different, opposing views. Yes, dear Editor, keep up the good work!

Couldn’t agree more Roger! It is a sign of the times that fragile souls can’t, as F. Scott Fitzgerald said, “hold two opposed ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function.” Well done editors, you are appreciated.
