The Montana High School Rodeo season is winding down with only a few rodeos remaining before the state finals in Baker, June 6-9. The same is true for the Montana Junior High School season. Their finals will be in Sidney from May 31-June 2.
The high school rodeo in Hamilton will feature about 110 contestants from all over Montana. The junior high rodeo will have about 80 contestants. Some junior high events are different from the high school because of the skill level and strength of the young athletes. These events include chute doggin’ where the cowboy is one the ground and throws the steer as it leaves the bucking chute; saddle steer riding; junior high break away roping and goat tying for boys; and junior high ribbon roping where the cowboy ropes the calf and the cowgirl has to grab the ribbon off the tail of the calf and race back to the finish line.
Cole Trexler, Paige Palin, Annie Alexander, Cassie Turner and Tayler Harris will be competing at the high school level. Reece Connor, Cash Trexler, Logan Gerhard, and Kamryn Jones will compete at the junior high level.
There is not a charge to come and watch the rodeo on Saturday or Sunday, just bring a lot of enthusiasm to cheer on the cowgirls and cowboys. The rodeo will begin at 10am on Saturday and 9am on Sunday. Saturday, around 4pm, there will are a special break away roping event to benefit Shelby Robinson, a high school rodeo alumni who is currently battling lymphoma.
