The Blue Devils outlasted the Dillon Beavers on Friday night in Corvallis, ending 2018 with a 39-37 win. Corvallis jumped out to a quick lead when Lainie Albright and Calla Haldorson dropped in long three point shots. The Blue Devil defense was tough too with Isabel Evans swatting down a Dillon shot and then in the Beavs’ next possession, Hannah Martin blocked another shot. Dillon switched to a full court press and held the Blue Devils scoreless until Haldorson dropped in another trey. Corvallis took a three point lead into the second quarter.
The spread in the game was never more than six points one way or the other after Corvallis’ initial run. Corvallis took a three point lead into the half but Dillon’s Tylia DeJohn dropped a trey right at the beginning of the third quarter and tied the game up, Corvallis went on another run but then Dillon would come right back. Turnovers marred the game for both teams. With the time ticking down, Corvallis had to rally after Dillon tied the game with a minute remaining. Dillon was in a double bonus situation and when Ashlyn Nixon drew her fourth foul, Coach Andy Knapp took two separate time outs to try and ice the free throw shooter, DeJohn. She missed the first but sank the second. Corvallis’ lead was one point with 30 seconds remaining. Nixon drew her fifth foul and DeJohn again went to the line with 17 seconds remaining. This time, DeJohn missed both. On the other end, Martin was fouled and made her first free throw with three-seconds remaining. Dillon’s last chance shot went wide as the buzzer sounded.
