Stevi wrestling program in rebuilding year

The Stevensville Yellowjackets lost nine wrestlers to graduation last spring so this is a rebuilding year, according to coach Ted Adams. This year there are only two seniors and a total of 13 wrestlers out. Although the numbers are down a little, Adams is confident the program will grow in the next few years.

“Our Little Guy program is doing well and that’a a feeder program for the high school,” he said. “We lost a lot of leadership last year with the seniors that graduated.”

The Glyn Brawley Classic was held on Saturday in Corvallis with 10 teams participating. Frenchtown won the event and Corvallis was second. Stevensville finished 10th.

Kyler Pancake was the only Stevensville winner. He took a 7-0 decision over Sentinel’s Dre Davis in the match. Dustin Steele took third at 120 with a pin over Corvallis’ James Wissenbach at 1:18. Aidan VanOstrand pinned Josh Gunter of Sentinel in the 205 division. That pin was at :57 seconds. At 285, Stevensville’s Tyler Woods pinned Chris Anderson of St.Ignatius/Charlo at 3:29.

Corvallis finished just 10 points behind first place Frenchtown. At 145 pounds, Aaron Christensen took a 7-2 decision over Big Sky’s Tristen Hauerwas for first. Drew Schmitt also took first. He pinned Isaak Maxfield of Stevensville at 3:33 in the 160 pound division. Jimmy Schmitt was pinned by Brody Marcure of Frenchtown at 120. Jake Kesl of Salmon took a 2-1 decision of Dante Venema at 126 pounds. Owen Indreland of Frenchtown won an 8-2 decision over Triston Davis at 132 pounds. Derrik Gasvoda lost to Trey Green of Superior who pinned Gasvoda at 1:12. Randon Weidow and Zach Morgan finished fourth. Steven VanZuyen of Salmon won a sudden victory over Widow at 138 pounds. Jacob Williams of Big Sky pinned Morgan at 152 pounds.

Florence and Hamilton were at the C.M. Russell Holiday Classic in Great Falls. There were 52 teams in this tournament ranging from Class AA to Class B/C. Florence’s Spencer Jones finished second at 182 pounds.
