Almost everyone in Victor knows Mason Kay. He has been on the Victor Fire Department since he was just out of high school. He is currently the assistant fire chief. He has been an EMS first responder and worked at Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital in the ER. He is also the assistant football coach for the Victor Pirates. He is married to Amy and they have three children.
Last June he found a small bump in his mouth. After multiple tests, biopsies, surgeries and bone debridement, they took out part of his jaw bone. He has been going to the hospital every day for antibiotics. After many months, the team doctors determined he may have bit on something hard and sharp that punctured the skin and injured the bone. With the decomposing bone fragment and bacteria, the infection is taking its toll on Kay. He will be heading to the University of Utah in a couple of weeks to see one of the top specialists in this field.
The antibiotic regimen is affecting his day-to-day life. Kay is not sleeping much and spends a lot of time reflecting on his family, friends and coworkers. His youngest daughter recently told her dad that she was going to give him the money in her savings account. Imagine that!
In the meantime, there are bills to pay. The Victor Fire Department and EMS will be hosting a chili cook off on Friday, November 10, at 7 p.m. The cost is $15 to enter and you must make enough chili to feed 20 people. If you just want to eat, please make a donation. There will also be raffle and a live auction.
