Small things matter

October 5, 2017 by Guest Post

Small Things Matter Montana’s monthly awareness campaign for October is focused on buying local produce. As the Hamilton Farmers Market winds down, please look to local farms and producers for filling your coffers for the winter.

Go to “hamiltonfarmersmarket.org” and tab over to “Farmers and Hot Food Vendors” to familiarize yourselves with local farm families and their produce offerings. If you don’t have room in your dry food storage for extras,  consider doing some power cooking and freezing a variety of soups and pre made dinners to warm you up after a day of hard work or recreation throughout the winter.

Why buy local? It builds  a stronger local economy in our community and supports our farm families and producers. The produce is GMO-free, fresh and better for you.  Buying local food preserves our open space for farming and our future. Additionally, buying local reduces the impact of transporting food long distance. According to “ Cultivating Healthy Food Systems 2017”, It is estimated the average American meal travels about 1500 miles to get  from the farm to the plate. Let’s change this! Please join us in sustaining local farmers and producers in our valley by stocking up for winter.

Thanks to the Hamilton Farmers Market Co-op and the collaborative efforts of the O’Hara Commons Wednesday market in providing the framework and inspiration for buying local products and supporting our producers.
