The Corvallis Blue Devils brought home the Southwest A district championship with Stevensville and Hamilton taking second and third. The top four teams will advance to the Divisional Tournament at Butte Central this weekend. Frenchtown finished fourth and will also advance.
The Blue Devils began their run with a 3-0 semi final win over Frenchtown. They won 25-19, 26-24 and 25-15. Corvallis had 40 kills with Maureen Jessop knocking down 11. Charlotte Powell and Denali Smith each had a block. The team dug up 52 balls and Hannah Hutchison and Kaitlin Irwin had 11 and 10 digs respectively. Kate Hurlbert had 34 assists and Hutchison had three aces and the team had a total of nine aces.
Because Corvallis had the No. 1 seed going into the tournament, they only had to play one other game, the championship game where they met Stevensville. Although Corvallis swept the Yellowjackets, Stevensville game them a run in the final game. Corvallis won, 25-18, 25-10, 25-22.
Corvallis had 42 kills with Jessop and Hutchison each smacking down 15 kills. Powell had one block. The team dug up 66 balls with Ashley Hornaday handling 14. Hurlbert had 35 assists and Jessop finished with five aces. The team had a total of eight aces.
Stevensville finished with 19 kills with Angel Richards knocking down 6. She also had a block. The Yellowjackets had 44 digs with Cassi Kopsa digging up 12 balls. Quinn Larson had all 19 assist. Richards had two aces as did Mikayla Hall.
Stevensville’s first game of the tournament was against Butte Central. Although it went five games, Stevensville defeated the Maroons, 25-16, 25-20, 21-25, 24-26, 15-12. Richards had 21 kills ant the team finished with 64 kills. Richards also had five blocks. Hall had 14 digs and Kopsa had 11. The team finished with 64 digs. Larson had 59 assists and the team finished with eight aces. Kaylee Berning and Prestley Robinson each had two aces.
Stevensville then took on Hamilton. Although the Yellowjackets won in three games, they were very close. Stevensville defeated Hamilton, 25-23, 25-23, 26-24. The Yellowjackets had 38 kills. Mikayla Newman had 11 kills. She also had two blocks with the team totaling four blocks. Hall had 14 digs and the team had 48. Larson had 31 assists. Robinson and Richards each had three aces.
Hamilton was led by Caitlin Dillon’s nine kills and 22 assists. Royal Beyer had four of Hamilton’s six blocks. Brook Huxtable had seven digs and the team had 32. Dillon also had four aces.
After losing to Stevensville, the Broncs won their next to games to finish in third place. They first took on Dillon and topped them, 25-20, 27-25, 25-20. Cariann Kunkel had 12 of the team’s 38 kills. She also had four blocks. Hamilton had a total of 10 blocks. Huxtable had 13 digs and Dillon finished with 21 assists. Hayley Hudgins had three aces with the team scoring eight aces total.
That win moved the Broncs into the game for third place where they met Frenchtown. It was a close match but Hamilton prevailed in five games, 25-10, 26-28 25-23, 25-27, 16-14. Hamilton finished with 48 kills with Kunkel smacking down 16. She also had 26 digs and the team totaled 116 digs. Royal Beyer had four blocks. Dillon had 32 assists and six aces. The team total 16 aces in their determination to win the match and advance to the divisional tournament.
Darby and Victor were at the 13C district tournament at Valley Christian in Missoula. In the opening game of the tournament, Darby topped Victor in three games. Darby then lost to Clark Fork in four games. Victor came back to defeat Lincoln in three games in loser out action. On Saturday, Darby again topped Victor, 3-1 with the loser taking fourth place. Clark Fork topped Darby, 3-0, with loser taking third place. Seeley-Swan won the tournament. Only the top two teams advance on to the Western C Divisional.
