Author to speak
Are you an aspiring author? Do you love Fantasy novels? Local fantasy author Brandon Griffin introduces his new book “Books of Azric: Truth” (volume 2) at North Valley Library in Stevensville on Wednesday, September 6 at 5:30 p.m. If you’re interested in the writing process, or interested in the fantasy genre, come hear Brandon speak about the process of writing; visualizing the plot, how he manages his time and what motivates him to write. Lolo Pass Visitor Center events
A variety of Nez Perce National Historic Trail Interpretive Programs have been held this summer at the Lolo Pass Visitor Center, located on the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests off Highway 12 along the Idaho–Montana state line. The last of these events are happening in September.
Two events are being held Saturday, September 9. From 9 to 11 a.m. (PDT). Valerie Bayer and Vicki Cox of the Montana Natural History Center will be holding a “Lolo Trail Bird Walk and Talk” in Packer Meadow. This will be a walking bird tour of the meadow, so bring your boots and binoculars if you have them. No birding experience or knowledge required. The tour will meet at the Lolo Pass Visitor Center.
Then, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. (PDT), Kate Davis, Executive Director of Raptors of the Rockies, will be presenting “Birds of Prey along the Lolo Trail.” Davis founded Raptors of the Rockies in 1988 to educate the public about raptors and resource conservation. She regularly appears on Montana Public Radio, has previously served on committees for the Raptor Research Foundation, and has authored numerous books on the birds. With the help of several winged friends, Davis’ presentation will highlight birds of prey found along the Lolo Trail.

Beekeepers
Beekeepers of the Bitterroot will hold its regular monthly meeting on Saturday, September 9 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Hamilton First Assembly of God at 601 W. Main Street (entry in the rear. bring a non-perishable item as donation to their food bank in appreciation for the use of their space.) UM Beekeeping Program’s Scott Debnam will be at the meeting. He can answer virtually any question based on his 15 or more years of keeping bees for the University. He will be discussing getting your bees ready for winter, queen loss (several members have lost queens this year), and a number of other topics. Make a note of any questions you might have for him and he should be able to help you.
Cowboy Music & Poetry
An Afternoon of Cowboy Music & Poetry will be held Saturday, September 9 from 3 to 6 p.m. at Ravalli County Museum, 205 Bedford, Hamilton. Sit under the trees and listen to a few yarns and tales gracefully told by talented cowboy poets. The art of yodeling and some good cowboy pickin’ will also be heard. Refreshments available. Center for Spiritual Living –
“Benefits & Challenges of Spiritual Community” with Mark Snider, a retired business man with metaphysical mojo, will be the presentation at the Sunday Service on September 10 at 9:30 a.m. at 328 Fairgrounds Road (across from Hamilton High School). Mark will share how being a member of CSL has brought depth and breadth to his life along with a different way of responding to life’s challenges. Green Thumbs Up
Green Thumbs Up Garden Club will meet Monday, September 11 at 2 p.m. in the downstairs meeting room of the Bitterroot Public Library in Hamilton. The meeting is free and open to the public. Learn how local plants/herbs can be used as tonics, food, and medicine. Renee Goddard, local naturopathic physician with a love for herbs, will demonstrate how to develop a winter herbal arsenal to keep your family healthy this winter. Never Forget Service
The 16th annual Never Forget Service organized by the United Veteran’s Council of Missoula and Ravalli Counties (UVC) will take place on Monday, September 11 at Rose Memorial Garden Park at the Vietnam Memorial in Missoula at 7 p.m. to commemorate the 2,986 innocent civilian men, women, and children that died at the hands of 19 terrorists on September 11, 2001. Tiny American flags representing those who died and other victims of terrorists will be planted in the ground in front of the Vietnam Memorial starting at 6 p.m. by the United Veteran’s Council and Missoula Exchange Club. More than 4,000 flags will be planted. Honor and color guards participating in the annual ceremony will be American Legion Post 27 Color Guard, VFW Post 209 Honor Guard, ROTC Color Guard at the University of Montana, Missoula Civil Air Patrol Color Guard, and Missoula Civil Air Patrol Color Guard. Taps will be played by Navy veteran Tim Gress. Bagpipes will be played by members of the Celtic Dragon Pipe Band. Retired firefighter Tom Zeigler will read the names of his friends who were New York City firefighters that died on 9/11 and representatives of the United Veteran’s Council and Missoula Exchange Club will say dedicating words to honor those that have died. At the end of the ceremony, a bell belonging to a Korean veteran will be tolled after Taps is played and the honor and color guards retire the colors.
The first Never Forget Service was hosted by college student Ali Harrison at the University of Montana in 2002 and 2003 but following that, the UVC took it over and has hosted it at Rose Memorial Garden Park.

Salamanders at library
Do you want to jam out to some amazing, rockin’ music? Join The Salamanders, an all-ages rock group from Missoula on Tuesday, September 12 from 6 to 7 p.m. and dance to fun tunes, play some instruments, and just enjoy the music. They are a positive thinking collaborative of accomplished singers, songwriters, and musicians who firmly believe that music is a great gateway to creative expression, exercise, wisdom, and fun! Fly Fishers of the Bitterroot
The FFB meeting will be Tuesday, September 12 at BJ’s Restaurant in Hamilton.
The following month, in October, the group will resume its first Tuesday of the month meetings. The social hour is 6 to 7 p.m. Cocktails and dinner are optional. Jesse Riding, General Manager of Rainey’s Flies, is the featured speaker. Rainey’s is one of the largest commercial fly tying operations in the country. The company was started by Jesse’s mother, Rainey, at their kitchen table. Jesse’s presentation is “Fly Tying on a Global Scale: From Feather to Fish.” He will discuss what to look for in a commercially produced fly, historic trends in flies, and the general business of fly tying. Joining Jesse will be Dick Sagara from Temple Fork Outfitters. Dick will provide a brief demonstration of some casting techniques.
