Sons of Norway/Tired Iron picnic
Bitterrootdalen Lodge and the Tired Iron Antique Tractor club will celebrate the longest day of the year on Wednesday, June 21 at 6 p.m. at Summerdale Park, 2.5 miles up Quast Lane, northeast of Corvallis. The Lodge will provide Shish-kabobs made from their famous Viking sausages, and have grill space for anyone bringing their own meat. The Lodge will provide paper cups and drinks, members and visitors should bring their own table service and a side dish to share. Sons of Norway wants to recognize the hard work of farmers and the general public is also invited. There will be children’s activities, time to visit and time for short business meetings, with the evening capped off when Bill Bradt lights off his “Norwegian Candle”. Bitterroot Community Band concerts
The Bitterroot Community Band will perform on Wednesdays, June 21 and 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the bandshell in Claudia Driscoll Park in Hamilton. The band will feature classic summer band music including marches, Broadway, classical and other popular genres. Free and open to the public.
Summer Solstice at Redsun Labyrinth
Summer Solstice will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 21 at Redsun Labyrinth with the traditional luminaria display. Beginning at dusk, the Labyrinth will be illuminated to allow visitors the pleasure of enjoying the longest day of the year while walking and meditating in a mountain meadow setting. Music and a bonfire will entice you to linger. The luminarias are weather dependent, so in the event of rain, they will not be displayed. Music lecture
A free lecture entitled “American Indian Music: Even More Than Drums & Flutes” will be presented by Scott Prinzing on Thursday, June 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Ravalli County Museum, 205 Bedford Street, Hamilton. Prinzing illustrates how Indians have contributed to American music in virtually every genre, including traditions often associated with distinctly non-Indian ethnic groups. The presentation is sponsored by Humanities Montana.
Pandemic lecture
Dr. Marshall Bloom of Rocky Mountain Laboratories will give a free lecture on predicting pandemics on Thursday, June 22 at 6 p.m. at North Valley Public Library.
RML is a part of the Division of Intramural Research of National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) of the National Institutes of Health. An Associate Director at RML, Dr. Bloom played a major role in design, construction and staffing of the RML Integrated Research Facility, which houses NIAID’s first Biosafety Level 4 research program. He is considered an authority on biosafety, biocontainment and management of high containment laboratory research programs. Local interest in the work of the Rocky Mountain Labs is high, as is the interest in the growing number of pandemics around the world.
Dr. Bloom is a recognized expert on the pathogenesis of tick-borne flaviviruses, persistent infections and parvoviruses, has written numerous scientific articles and is the recipient of many honors and awards. He is Chief of the Biology of Vector-Borne Viruses section in the Laboratory of Virology and is the Associate Director for Scientific Management at Rocky Mountain Laboratories. Dr. Bloom sits on the editorial board of Virology and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, American Society of Microbiology, the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences and the American Society for Virology.

Bicycle safety clinic
Join Melinda Barnes, a League Certified Instructor with Bike Walk Montana, to become more confident and comfortable riding a bicycle in traffic. Whether you’re a novice or an experienced rider, you will gain additional skills and knowledge from this clinic. The Rode Skillz Safety Clinic will take place Friday, June 23 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Ravalli County Fairgrounds (Arts Building). The clinic will be divided into three sessions: The classroom portion (1-½ hours) covers current laws, safety tips/guidance, equipment, gear, parts of a bike, rules of the road, and Q&A. The second session (1-½ hours) includes practice in a safe environment (parking lot). The third session (1 hour) will feature “hands on” instruction and practice riding on local roads in traffic. For this class, participants must be 16 years of age or older (League of American Bicyclists requirement); however, those 14 years and up will be ok if they are accompanied by an adult who is also taking the class. Bicycle helmets are required. The cost is $20. Snacks and drinks will be provided. MRBA Annual Campout
The annual Montana Rockies Bluegrass Association campout will be held June 23-25 at Forrest Flats, Highway 10 E. between Turah and Clinton, about 3 miles east of Turah and 3 miles west of Clinton. There will be signs. There will be dry camping Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Breakfast potluck at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday night the association will provide steaks and dessert. Members are asked to bring potluck dishes to finish the meal. Guest speakers will be State Representatives Nancy Ballance and Theresa Manzella talking about the legislative session. Ravalli County Republican Women meet the fourth Tuesday of each month.
Fly Fishers of the Bitterroot
The monthly meeting of FFB has changed location and date for the June program. The club will meet Tuesday, June 27 at 7 p.m. at the Bitterroot River Inn. Club members can join together for dinner at The Edge Restaurant between 5:30 and 7 p.m. The June presentation will be by guest speaker Rick Hefele, a world renowned author, and a darn great fly fisher! Rick has a Master’s degree in aquatic entomology and a minor in fisheries biology. He has worked as a professional aquatic biologist for over 30 years and penned many books and articles for American Angler magazine over the years. The title of Rick’s presentation is “Understanding Emergers” and includes in-depth discussion of emergence behavior, effective fly patterns that cover a range of situations, and presentation techniques to match what insects are doing in and on the water. There will be a raffle of Rick’s current book with the lucky winner getting a signed, personalized copy. Healthcare legislation meeting
Are you interested in learning more about the new American Healthcare Bill now before the U.S. Senate? An informational meeting with Q&A sessions will be held Tuesday, June 27 at 7 p.m. at the Hamilton Senior Center, 820 N. 4th in Hamilton.
Vicky Byrd, RN, Executive Director of the Montana Nurses Association, will be speaking on how the new bill affects our healthcare, how it differs from the Affordable Care Act, and how it will impact Montanans. Tara Jensen, Montana Budget and Policy Center, will be speaking on the ramifications the new bill would have on Montana programs and agencies like the Montana Dept. of Public Health & Human Services.

Grief support lecture
Are you suffering from a loss? Loss of a loved one, a furry companion, a job, a home? Would you like to learn how to support someone that is grieving? Kim Parrow of Tamarack Grief Resource Centre is giving a talk entitled “Support after a Loss” on Wednesday June 28, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the North Valley Public Library in Stevensville. Grief affects everyone differently. Come and learn about common reactions to loss and how grief responses may differ as well as tips and strategies to move through your own grief and how to support those you love.
