I would like to inform the Stevensville community of the activities American Legion Fort Owen Post #94 has planned for the Memorial Day weekend.
The weekend for us actually starts on the preceding Friday (May 26) with the marking of the veterans’ graves with flags. We will formally begin this process at 5 p.m. that afternoon starting at the Riverside Cemetery. Our Post also has responsibility for Maplewood and Sunnyside as well. Current plans call for flags to be put out at Sunnyside earlier in the day, and we will put the Maplewood flags out either following the Riverside event or simultaneously with Riverside depending on how many participants we have. Community volunteers are always welcome!
Memorial Day (Monday, May 29) will find us participating in the Corvallis parade which will start at 10 a.m. We will have our veterans float in the parade and we are always looking for veteran riders, so show up at the north end of Corvallis’ main street if interested in riding on our float.
Later in the day, starting at 6 p.m. at Riverside, our Post Honor Guard will be conducting recognition ceremonies at all of the local cemeteries. We will start with a short talk on the significance of Memorial Day followed by the firing of three volleys and the playing of taps. We will then conduct the same ceremony at Maplewood, St. Mary’s and Sunnyside. We are estimating that we will be at Maplewood around 6:20 p.m., St. Mary’s at 6:40 p.m. and Sunnyside at 7:15 p.m. We invite the public to come help us remember those who have given so much to help keep us free.
Tuesday, May 30, we will meet at Riverside at 10 a.m. to pick up flags.
