There was a bit of drama at the Bob Reed/RCIA track meet on Saturday in Corvallis. With only the six valley schools participating, the events moved right along with smaller numbers competing in each event. Corvallis won both the girls’ and the boys’ team scoring.
The 1,600 meter girls’ race came down to two one hundredths of a second between first and second. Corvallis’ zHannah Martin crossed the finish line at 5:39.71. Gracie Lang of Darby finished at 5:39.73. Lang came out strongly on the first lap but Martin pushed her and took the lead midway through the second lap of the four lap race. Lang fell back a couple more racers before making her move to retake the lead. She was a couple strides behind Martin with half a lap to go and as they rounded the final turn, Lang was at Martin’s shoulder. But Martin was able to hold on for the lead. Lang came back in the 3,200 and won that race with a time of 12:21.37.
Last Tuesday, the Western Montana Top Ten meet was held in Missoula. At that meet, Darby’s Kye McCollaum finished third in the 300 hurdles with a time of 41.56 which was good enough to qualify for state. He was hoping to improve on that time after winning the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.71. He had already qualified in both events for state but wanted to move up. However, as the field came around the corner, McCollaum stumbled but recovered. That gave Ridge Albright of Corvallis the advantage. But McCollaum is a competitor and he pushed even harder. He crossed another hurdle and then at the next one, went completely down. He got back up and finished the race but was disappointed. Albright won with a time of 44.06.
Corvallis’ throwing coach had to leave the meet unexpectedly due to a family emergency. But that didn’t stop his throwers from giving it their all. In the girls’ shot put, Corvallis put six throwers on the podium with Denali Smith winning with a throw of 37-9. Calla Haldorson, Brooke Wiltbank, Brooklyn Palin, Tayler Wright and Alis Auch completed the sweep. In the discus, Palin took the top spot with a throw of 131-6. Haldorson, Wiltbank and Gabby Kay finished 2nd, 3rd and 6th. Wright, Smith and Laine Albright finished 2nd, 3rd and 5th in the javelin. For the boys, Garrett Brown won the shot put with a throw of 47 feet and Zach Jessop was second. Brown was 6th in the discus. Zach Jessop was second in the javelin. Liang Liedle  was 6th in that event.
Florence’s Jethro Thorne was a triple winner. He clocked an 11.69 in the 100 meter race. He then came back to win the 400 with a time of 51.93, and the 200 with 23.48. His time in the 400 qualified him for state.
Hamilton’s Reilly Rostad was also a triple event winner. She won the 100, 200 and the long jump. Rostad and Penny Jessop of Corvallis battled in the sprints. Rostad had a time of 13.29 in the 100 and 27.21 in the 200. She also jumped 16’8 3/4” in the long jump to win that event.
