Fellowship Club
The Bitterroot Public Library’s Fellowship Club will be meeting on Thursday, June 1 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. to discuss the book “Emotional Alchemy: How the Mind Can Heal the Heart” by Tara Bennett-Goleman.
This remarkable book maps the mind and shows how, according to recent advances in cognitive therapy, most of what troubles us falls into ten basic emotional patterns. In the same way that Alchemists sought to transform lead into gold, the author says, we all have the natural ability to turn our moments of confusion or emotional pain into insightful clarity.
Through the simple practice of mindfulness taught in this book, and fascinating parallels of the very latest research in neuroscience with the ancient wisdom of ancient Buddhism, we can free ourselves of our self-destructive patterns and replace them with empathy for ourselves and others, as well as the freedom to be more creative and alive. The author also teaches how we can use these techniques to develop an awareness that lets us see things as they truly are without distortion or judgment, giving the most insightful explanation of how mindfulness can change not only our lives, but the very structure of our brains. The result is a whole new way of approaching our relationships, work, and internal lives.
Tara Bennett-Goleman, a psychotherapist and teacher, has been offering workshops on the synthesis of Buddhism and psychotherapy for close to ten years with her husband, Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence.
The Fellowship Club meets every second Thursday of the month in the West Meeting Room of the Bitterroot Public Library and is free and open to anyone seeking to promote individual and collective well being. Call 363-1670, or email jacostant@gmail.com for more information.
