Trout Unlimited
Bitterroot Trout Unlimited will meet Thursday, November 17 at 7 p.m. at the Hamilton Elks Lodge, 203 State Street, Hamilton. Guest speaker is Kellie Carim, PhD, National Genomics Center for Wildlife and Fish Conservation, speaking on “eDNA: tracking trout with DNA.”
Every paper or a website has a story about how DNA technology
is revolutionizing the world. Well, that now extends to fishing! A new method called environmental DNA or eDNA is enabling scientists to figure out what kind of fish are in a particular stream simply by running water over a filter and then sequencing the DNA on that filter. Kellie Carim is eDNA coordinator at the National Genomics Center for Wildlife and Fish Conservation and her work is making it possible to identify native trout, or invasive species like pike, tarpon, zebra mussels, or nonnative plants. Each
species has a unique DNA signature. The implications of eDNA are significant and it is being used in the Bitterroot. Attend this meeting and learn how modern molecular biology is helping to understand ancient native species. Maybe someday there will be a pocket test an angler can dip in the water to make sure there are fish in that run!
The public is invited to attend and there is no charge for admission. Dinner with Kellie at Spice of Life will take place at 5 p.m. before the meeting. Spice of Life will donate 10% of the proceeds to the club.
