National Day of Prayer
On Thursday, May 5, the Town of Stevensville will participate in the National Day of Prayer, which is set by Presidential Proclamation, and in coordination with the National Day of Prayer Task Force, centered in Colorado Springs, with the NDP State Coordinator being located in Helena. The local sponsorship of this event is shared by Stevensville’s American Legion Post and Masonic Lodge Unit.
The day will be honored by three main activities:
- St. Mary’s Historical Mission Chapel, at 4th and Charlos Streets, will be open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. for any and all who desire to come offer individual prayers for local, state and national aims and needs. This historical chapel, which is actually not part of the Catholic Church, but a historical site, offers a non-denominational location for all faiths to freely exercise prayer to God as each sees fit. The board of this historical site has graciously offered the chapel for the day in support of the fact that here is where Montana began, and thus a fitting place to honor inter-faith prayers.
- At 12:10 p.m., “Patriot Hour” at the Mission Chapel, a 3/4-hour of community-focused group prayer will take place, where those who prefer to attend a larger inter-faith congregation can come on their lunch hour, and be led in prayer by local and state official facilitators. The time will be divided into three ten-minute segments focused on local, state and national topics of prayer. The remaining time will be devoted to recognizing those who have passed this year, such as firefighters, police officers, veterans and others who have served our region and our nation.
- At 6 p.m. at the Senior Center on Mission Street, there will be a free Spaghetti Dinner with music, followed by a program and prayer time, again focused on the three divisions mentioned above. The special speaker this year is retired Army Colonel Sam Birky, who now serves as State Chaplain for The American Legion. All are welcome to come, eat, and share in this event freely. A free-will offering will be taken to help this annual event to continue.
Any additional information desired may be received by contacting Clay Freeman, Police and Fire Chaplain for Stevensville, by calling 370-8377 or e-mailing clay.freeman68@gmail.com.
