Usually the first track meet of the season features rain and snow, but that was not the case on Saturday at the Gene Hughes Invitational in Corvallis. Blue skies and fair weather gave the athletes a chance to shine early in the season. Frenchtown picked up the boys team championship while Hamilton won the girls’ team scoring. Because of Spring Break, some of the schools did not have a full team competing.
Hamilton’s Cam Meikle was a double winner, taking the 1,600 in 4:35.73, just under 13 seconds faster than second place. He won the 3,200 with a time of 10:07.86, while teammate Matt Wilson finished a distant second with a time of 10:29.95. Jaylen Taggart won the discus with a throw of 139.07.
Jacie Schmalz of Hamilton won the 1600 and the 3,200, easily outdistancing second place Lily Lang of Darby in both races. Taylor Bess was also a double winner for Hamilton. She won the pole vault with a vault of 8 feet, and she won the long jump with a leap of 16-1 ½ . Kacia Guisinger won the high jump with the bar set at 4’8”
Caden Venters of Florence won the javelin with a throw of 171-01. Marcus Zeiler added points to Florence’s total with a third place finish in the 44 and sixth in the triple jump. Dean Klakken ran his first 400 meter race ever and finished fifth for Florence.
Luke Channer of Corvallis won the shot put with a throw of 45-4. Josh Jessop took first in the 800 for Corvallis and the 1600 relay team of Josh Jessop, Cole Wohltman, Ridge Albright, and Bruce Thomas won with a time of 3:39.16. Thomas also won the long jump.
On the girls’ side, Penny Jessop won both the 100 and the 200-meter races for the Blue Devils. Heidi Nisly won the 800.
