The Hamilton girls and the Corvallis boys brought home top honors at the Sapphire Twilight Meet on Thursday in Corvallis. The event showcases some of the top teams in the area. This year, in addition to Hamilton and Corvallis, Columbia Falls, Polson and Charlo also participated.
The Hamilton girls had four wins. Jacie Schmalz won the 1,600 with a time of 5:24.11. Taylor Bess finished first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.30. She also won the long jump with a leap of 16-00-.25. Kacia Guisinger took top honors in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5 feet.
Penny Jessop of Corvallis won the 400-meter race with a time of 1:01.88. Brookelyn Palin won the discus with a throw of 123-02, unofficially the third best throw in the state in Class A. The Corvallis 1,600 meter relay team of Penny Jessop, Maureen Jessop, Heidi Nisly and Kathryn Rowley won with a time of 4:13.48. That time is the second best in Class A in the state.
The Blue Devil boys picked up five wins in the meet. Josh Jessop won the 800 with a time of 1:59.89. That is the second fastest time in the state in Class A this year so far. Joel Haas won the 1,600 with a time 4:44.44. Cole Wohltman won the high jump with an effort of 6 feet. Braxton Roth picked up another win in the triple jump, marking 42-09. The final win for Corvallis was Skylar Jessop’s heave in the discus, 144-07.
Hamilton’s Cam Meikle won the 3,200 with a time of 9:46.91. That time is currently the second best in Class A.
On Saturday, some of the valley teams went to Columbia Falls to Columbia Falls Iceberg Invitational. Although Columbia Falls won both the boys and girls team scoring, Stevensville had a strong showing. The Yellowjackets finished third in the girls and the boys scoring. Mariah Hinson won the long jump with a leap of 15-3, and the triple jump with an effort of 34-2.5. Hunter Casey was a double winner for Stevensville also. He won the 800 with a time of 2:03.81 and also won the 300 hurdles with a time of 42.09. The 1,600-relay team of Payten Davids, Chayse Richards, Dustin Saxon and Justin Saxon won that race with a time of 3:43.86.
There were several others who placed for Stevensville in the meet. Megan Pendergast was second in the 100 hurdles and third in the 300 hurdles. She also placed second in the triple jump and fifth in the long jump. Alli Emery was fifth in the 800 and fifth in the 1,600. Hannah Fry took fifth in the high jump, third in the long jump, and sixth in the triple jump. Payton Tillotson was second in the discus. Faith Zeiler was fourth in the high jump.
For the Yellowjacket boys, Casey also took second in the 400 and sixth in the high jump. John Diepstraten finished third in the javelin. Rial Johnson was sixth in the 1,600 and fourth in the 3,200. Benito Fernandez was third in the 3,200. The 400-relay team finished fifth.
Hamilton’s Ayden Carmody won the pole vault, clearing the bar at 13 feet. Tyler Chouinard finished fifth in the high jump. Dillon Spear was fourth in the discus. For the Hamilton girls, Ani Mason finished fifth in the 300 hurdles. Brooke Wiltbank took fifth in the discus and Hennesy Meyer was fifth in the javelin and fourth in the pole vault.
Corvallis had wins from Luke Channer and Skylar Jessop. Channer won the shot put with a put of 46-10 and placed second in the discus. Skylar Jessop won the discus with a throw of 151-7. That is the best throw in the discus in Class A in the state to date. Other Blue Devils who placed were: Marvin Reynoso, fourth in the pole vault; Spencer T Jessop, third in the discus and sixth in the javelin.
The Blue Devil girls earned points in the hurdles from Brittany Pettenger-Piscapo who placed fourth in the 100 hurdles. She was followed by Stephanie Stoker who was fifth. Charis Leopold finished sixth in the discus.
The smaller schools were at the Seeley Swan Invitational at Big Sky High School in Missoula. Darby won the boys team scoring. They picked up first place finishes in the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles, and the 3,200. Kye McCollaum won both hurdle races with a time of 17.16 in the 110 hurdles and a time of 42.80 in the 300 hurdles. Evan Duggan won the 3,200 with a time of 10:33.95, 24 seconds faster than second place. He finished second in the 1,600 race. Dylan Parks was third in the 110 hurdles and the 300 hurdles. John Beckers was fourth in the javelin. Casey Ehmann finished second in the 300 hurdles and fifth in the 100 hurdles. Kylie Fisher was sixth in the shot put.
Florence’s Caden Venters won the javelin with a throw of 156-09. The Falcon’s 400-relay team of Carson Katen, Dean Klakken, Venters, and Marcus Zeiler won that race with a time of 46.81. The Falcon’s 1,600-relay team won their race with a time of 3:45.49. That team was made up of Harvey Blake, Justin Jones, Katen and Klakken. Blake finished sixth in the 1,600-meter race. Zeiler was third in the triple jump. Bridger Dragoo finished third in the shot put and Dawson Thrasher was sixth. For the girls, Autumn Round was sixth in the 400. Alexis Taulbee finished fourth in both the 100 and 300 hurdles. Florence’s 1,600-relay team finished fifth.
Victor’s Jesse Pearson finished sixth in the triple jump.
