Broncs, Blue Devils split opening games

The Hamilton Broncs won against rival Corvallis on Thursday and then lost to Butte Central on Saturday for their opening weekend of softball. Hayley Hudgins started as pitcher for Hamilton and Sky Lopez came in and relieved her in the fourth inning. Hudgins was credited with the win. Although the Broncs won, 15-6, it was not without some struggles in their pitching. Hamilton walked 13 and two batters were hit. Kelsie Meis was the catcher for Hamilton. Kayla Fields was the Blue Devils’ pitcher and took the loss. Taia Tully was the catcher.
Hamilton got on the board early with two runs in the first inning and another two in the second. Corvallis put a run up in the first and another in the third inning. Hamilton went on a spree with five runs in the third inning and went on to score in every inning but the sixth inning.
Hamilton’s Caitlin Dillon went 2-for-2 with a triple and two RBIs. Lopez had a double and was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Meis also had a double and two RBIs. She was 2-for-3 at bat. Mallory McGill was 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Rachel Ringer also had an RBI. For Corvallis, Cambrey Powell went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Tully went 2-for-2 at bat and Hannah Brown was 1-for-3 at bat.
Hamilton took on Butte Central on Saturday. Jordan Taggart was the pitcher with Meis as catcher. Butte Central jumped out to an early lead and built upon it. Hamilton wasn’t able to get a runner home until the fourth inning. Butte Central went on to win, 7-2. Dillon was 1-for-2 at bat. Rachel Ringer went 1-for-3 with a triple and an RBI.
Corvallis slammed Whitefish, 19-3, on Friday. With Fields pitching, the Blue Devils only allowed six hits while belting 22 hits themselves. Brown knocked a triple while going 4-for-4 at bat and knocking in four runners. Powell was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs. Nicole Turner went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs. Hannah Capko hit 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Megan Bradshaw was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Tully went 2-for-3 with a double. Celina Shepherd and Kira Doyle also had RBIs.
Stevensville lost to Butte Central, 10-0.
Florence slammed Deer Lodge in a double header on Thursday. The Falcons dominated the first game with a 16-0 win. Shannon Byrne was pitching with Chloe Arthur catching. Arthur had three RBIs and was 2-for-3 at bat. Natalie Dulac went 2-for-4 with a triple and four RBIs. Sarah Schurg went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. Brooklyn Little also had an RBI.
The Falcons were just hitting their stride in the second game. They scored five runs in the first inning, six in the second, and went on to win, 20-3, on nine hits. Schurg pitched for Florence with Dulac catching. Dulac had a home run and four RBIs. She was 2-for-3 at bat. Arthur was also 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a double. Shay Waldbillig had two RBIs and Little and Kristin Hall each had an RBI.
Florence finished out the weekend with a 12-3 win over Plains. Byrne was the winning pitcher with Arthur catching. Dulac continued to have success at bat, hitting 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Jewel Zeiler also had a double and was 2-for-4 at bat. She finished with two RBIs. Arthur went 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Waldbillig, Little and Hall all had an RBI.
