Quilters Guild
The Bitterroot Quilters Guild program in October features freelance
costume designer, quilt artist, and former UM instructor Christine
Milodragovich. Her program on textiles will highlight everything a
quilter needs to know in using and evaluating fabrics in their projects.
The program is on Wednesday, October 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Daly-Leach Chapel community room in Hamilton. The public is welcome to attend.
Zen Buddhism class
Join in a class on the fundamental teachings of the Buddha as taught by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh on Wednesday, October 28, including exercises of mindful breathing, listening, walking, eating; the Eightfold Path with the basic teaching on Mindfulness; the Five Precepts for living in the world; and the Heart Sutra. The class, led by Jill Davies (642-3601) meets 2nd and 4th Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at The Center for Spiritual Living, 1720 N. First Street, Suite C in Selway Commons, north of Sears in Hamilton. Class fee is by donation.

Florence bike path event
“Light Up the Bike Path,” a community event to celebrate the relighting of the Florence Bike Path, will be held Friday, October 30 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Registration and free pet photos will be at Florence Ace Hardware (photographer will be on hand until 5:30 p.m.). Trick or Treat along the Path and try your paws at the Pet Agility Course at Physical Therapy Specialists of Florence. For more info call Nick at 239-8855, Brenda at 360-2931 or Ann at 403-6491. Trunk-or-Treat
Lone Rock School’s “Trunk-or-Treat” and Fall Carnival will be held at the school on Friday, October 30, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Everyone’s invited! Wear your costume for trick-or-treating in the school parking lot and then head into the gym for the Fall Carnival. Play games, win prizes and enjoy delicious snacks and drinks. Buy tickets for 50¢ each; all games cost between 1 and 4 tickets. Proceeds support classroom activities through the purchase of supplies and materials. For more information call 777-3314.
Halloween dance
A community Halloween dance will be held Friday, October 30 from 7 p.m. to 12 midnight at the Bedford Building in Hamilton. The Freaky Friday Monster Mash includes music by Chris Lane, Joan Zen, a costume contest and no host bar. Admission is $20 per person. Get out and kick off the Halloween weekend with great music, dancing and costumes. The dance is hosted by the Ravalli County Democratic Central Committee.

Halloween breakfast
A Halloween breakfast will be held Saturday, October 31 from 7 to 11 a.m. at the Victor Senior Center. The menu will be sausage gravy, biscuits, hashbrowns, scrambled eggs and beverages. Cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children under 10. Everyone is welcome.
Florence American Legion raffle
The Florence American legion Post 134 will be selling raffle tickets at Gary & Leo’s IGA from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on the following Saturdays: Oct. 31, Nov. 7, Nov. 14. The Post is raffling grocery gift cards worth $100, $200 and $300 that can be redeemed at the IGA store. Proceeds will benefit veterans living in the area and the tickets will be drawn at Glen’s Cafe in Florence on Nov. 16 at 12 noon. Stop by for some pie and coffee and meet some of the post members. Kids’ Halloween Party
The Bitter Root Eagles Lodge, located at 125 N 2nd, Hamilton, will host a Children’s Halloween Party on Saturday, October 31 at 1 p.m. The party is for children 12 and younger. There will be crafts, games, a costume contest, and treats. This is open to the public and all are welcome.
DAR
Women interested in becoming a member of DAR (Daughters of American Revolution) can attend an informational meeting on Saturday, October 31, at the Missoula Public Library from 2 to 4 p.m. The meeting will be held in the downstairs meeting room. There will be a brief presentation of the application process and then members will meet with women individually to go over their papers. Light refreshments will be served.
Halloween Parade
The annual Halloween Costume Parade on Hamilton’s Main Street will take place on Saturday, October 31 at 4:30 p.m. Kids are invited to gather in the parking lot of the Hamilton Post Office for a short parade down Main Street, from Fourth to Second, before dispersing to trick-or-treat downtown and throughout the city. Smaller children should be accompanied by an adult. Two blocks of Main Street will be closed from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. to ensure safety of the participants. The annual Costume Parade is sponsored by the Hamilton Downtown Association. For more information, contact the HDA at 360-9124.
Trunk-R-Treat
Stevensville United Methodist Church will hold a Trunk-R-Treat on Saturday, October 31 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Methodist Church parking lot, corner of Pine and E. 3rd in Stevensville. Church members will decorate their vehicles and dress up in costumes, and hand out candy and other treats to kids who come to trick-or-treat.
Daly Mansion Haunted Hayrides
An invasion has taken place on the grounds of the Daly Mansion! Alien Spiders have started a frightful infestation. The haunted Hayride will take you through the wave of destruction. Some walking is required. Friday, October 30 and Saturday, October 31 from 7 to 11 p.m. $5 per person. Not recommended for very young children. Hot cider, cocoa, and popcorn balls will be on sale by the Mansion volunteers. Come join the fun! This is a fundraiser to benefit the Daly Mansion Preservation Trust. Square dance club
Barry Bartlette and Ray Dunbar will call for Boots n’ Calico’s Halloween Party Dance on Saturday, October 31 at the Golden Age Hall, 727 S. 5th Street, Hamilton. Costume attire will be featured with plenty of Halloween treats. Dance time will be 7 to 9:30 p.m. with round dancing at 7 p.m. followed by a mainstream dance at 7:30 p.m. All square dancers and observers are welcome.

Nonviolent Communication Discussion Group

History lecture
The North Valley Public Library will host Humanities Montana Speakers Bureau program “How We Miss Them: Ghostly Gatherings from the Treasure State” with Ellen Baumler on Tuesday, November 3 at 6:30 p.m. The program will be located in the Community room of the North Valley Public Library. The presentation is free and open to the public.
History and the supernatural are the canvas for this program that intertwines the past with the present. Historian, storyteller, and award-winning author Ellen Baumler weaves a ghostly web in a thought-provoking journey to Montana’s most spirited places. Basing her true stories on firsthand accounts, personal interviews, and historical records, her well-researched tales have scared and delighted audiences of all ages. Haunted places include hotels, houses, cemeteries, mines, and historic landscapes across Montana. With a ghostly twist on history, Baumler captures Montana’s cultural heritage and brings the state’s supernatural past to life.
Ellen Baumler earned her Ph.D. from the University of Kansas in English, classics, and history. She has been the Montana Historical Society’s interpretive historian since 1992 and is the author of numerous books and dozens of articles on diverse topics. Her stories of the supernatural have been collected in three books: “Spirit Tailings,” “Beyond Spirit Tailings” and “Montana Chillers.”

Fly Fishers of the Bitterroot
The monthly meeting of FFB is Tuesday, November 3, at BJ’s Restaurant in Hamilton. Social hour is 6 to 7 p.m. with cocktails/dinner optional. The featured speaker is John Arnold, co-owner of Headhunters Fly Shop on the banks of the Missouri River in Craig, Mt. In an effort to extend fishing opportunities beyond dry fly season into the spring and fall shoulder seasons, John has popularized the use of lightweight two-handed “spey” style tackle for trout fishing. Drawing on techniques from salmon and steelhead anglers, John will discuss how to fish for trout using light “trout spey” tackle. FFB is a social club that is involved in fly fishing. Spiritual Masters Video Series
A showing of “Brother Sun, Sister Moon,” a full-length biopic movie highlighting the life of St. Francis of Assisi, will take place Wednesday, November 4 at 6:30 p.m. at The Center for Spiritual Living, 1720 N. 1st Street, Hamilton (north of Sears). The movie follows the story of Francesco, a boy who renounces his wealthy upbringing to serve God. He is joined by Clare, a beautiful woman who is also sympathetic to the plight of the poor. He was an extraordinarily complex and difficult figure whose effect on his contemporary society was electrifying. Even today, many people are moved by his visionary message of universal tolerance.
