The Stevensville Scarecrow Festival will take place on First Friday, October 2 in Stevensville so get your scarecrow entries in! Entry forms are available at the Bitterroot Star and Stevensville Main Street Office. Deadline for entries is 6 p.m. on September 25. Prizes will be awarded for People’s Choice 1st place $200, 2nd Place $100 and 3rd Place $50. There will also be two Artistic Merit Awards with 1st $125 and 2nd $75.
In conjunction with the scarecrow contest, there will also be Living Statues during First Friday, October 2 from 5 to 8:30 p.m. in downtown Stevensville. Win cash prizes of $100 for 1st Place, $60 for 2nd Place and $40 for 3rd Place – and you can keep all your donations! Living statues hold a pose typically until someone makes a donation then you can repay that person a number of ways: changing positions with a flourish, acknowledging the person in some way, or whatever you choose to do. Bring your carved pumpkin and entry form to Creamery Garden Park (on Main across from Rocky Mountain Bank) on October 2 from 5 to 6 p.m. Pumpkins will be lighted and displayed and may not be removed before 8 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for 1st and 2nd place each age category.

BPL Used Book Sale
Attention all Bibliophiles! The Annual Friends of the Bitterroot Public Library Used Book Sale will be held September 23-26 in the downstairs Community Room in the Bitterroot Public Library at 306 State St. in Hamilton.
The sale days are Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday & Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The price for all items is $1.00 per inch thick. Saturday all day will be the ever-popular Bag Sale when all the items that can be stuffed in a grocery bag are $3.00 per bag – bring your own bags. Another popular feature of the book sale is free books all week long outside on the sidewalk. On Saturday after 2 p.m. there will be a Truckload Sale – $15.00 per load! Bring your own truck and load it up! A silent auction of special books ends at 5 p.m. on Friday.
Volunteers are welcome and needed to help sort books during the sale. A sign-up work schedule is posted on the Friends of the Library bulletin board near the front door of the library.
All proceeds from the book sale go to benefit the Bitterroot Public Library.

BEAR open house
BEAR will hold an open house with hors d’oeuvres and tours at the new BEAR Den on Wednesday, September 23 from 5 to 7 p.m. at 1105 W. Main in Hamilton. Youth awards will be presented at 7:45 p.m. followed by a slide show of the year’s adventures. The slide show will be picnic style on the lawn – bring warm clothes and a blanket or lawn chair. In case of inclement weather, the slide show portion of the event will take place at the Bedford Building.
Quilters’ Guild
The Bitterroot Quilters’ Guild will host author and quilt designer Mary Lou Weidman at its meeting on Wednesday, September 23 at 6:30 p.m. at Daly-Leach Chapel’s community room. Her entertaining program and trunk show on “Leaving a Bit of You — Why Story Quilts Matter” will feature her distinctive “out of the box” style and techniques. The public is welcome to attend.

Stevensville Town Council
The Stevensville Town Council will hold a regular meeting on Thursday, September 24 at 7 p.m. at the Town Hall, 206 Buck. Agenda items include discussion/decision: to reconsider motion for Councilmember Crews Recusal for mayor appointment process; appointment of mayor; to adopt Amended Ordinance 158, Animals; reconsideration and adoption of Ordinance 157, Tree Ordinance, to name a few. The meeting will be preceded by a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. on Ordinance 158, Animals, to hear comment on the proposed amendment to allow farm animals on school property for the FFA program.
Victor park board
The next meeting of the Victor Park District will be Thursday, September 24 at 7 p.m. at the meeting room of Farmers State Bank in Victor (enter through south door). Members will be discussing the fall wrap up of the season, future projects, winter garbage collection and planting a memorial tree in the park for Louise Langton. Baroque music concert
Bitterroot Baroque presents the innovative West Coast early music group Agave Baroque joined by the acclaimed countertenor, Reginald Mobley, playing a concert entitled “Song of Songs: Music of Love and Loss in the Shadow of the Thirty Years’ War” on Friday, September 25 at 7 p.m. at St. Francis Catholic Church in Hamilton. From heartbreaking laments to intimate expressions of faith and hope, this exquisite program features vocal and instrumental works by Johann Christoph Bach, Matthias Weckmann, Franz Tunder, and David Pohle. The instrumentalists of Agave Baroque include four Baroque violins/violas, Baroque cello, Baroque guitar/theorbo and portitive organ. Admission is at the door, $25 general, $10 students, or “pay-as-you-are-able.”

Pathways to Wellness symposium
The second annual Pathways to Wellness: Exploring Natural Alliances will be held on Saturday, September 26 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This one-day health symposium will highlight 10 holistic health alliances that complement or take the place of traditional medicine. Holistic medicine has been shown to be effective in healing a variety of chronic ailments. A keynote talk by Laura Garber of Homestead Organics will emphasize how health can be achieved and maintained by eating healthy organic foods. Concurrent workshops will highlight many holistic options to support a vibrant and healthy lifestyle. A $15 registration fee will cover lunch and all workshops. Public Lands Day event
Volunteers are needed for a native plant restoration project at Travelers’ Rest State Park, 6717 Hwy 12 W, Lolo, in honor of the National Public Lands Day on Saturday, September 26 from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon.
Are you a master gardener, or do you just like to get your hands dirty? In celebration of National Public Lands Day, we invite you to help us improve our Palouse Prairie Restoration Garden at Travelers’ Rest State Park. The Restoration Garden showcases native plants of historic and cultural significance. Tasks include removing invasive weeds from the garden, transplanting existing plants from other beds, and planting new forbs and shrubs. No prior gardening experience needed; just bring a good attitude. Families and volunteers of all ages are welcome! Travelers’ Rest will provide all the necessary tools. Dress appropriately for the weather.

Jacket Blackout Run
The Jacket Blackout Run will be this Saturday, September 26, at the Stevensville football field. Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. The Little Jacket Lap will begin at 6:30. This is one lap around the football field. At 7 p.m., the 1 Mile Fun Run begins and at 7:30, the 5K run begins. The course for the 5K runs around the town of Stevensville. The 5K will be using a Chip timing system. There will also be a color explosion for those who wish to participate. In addition to the races, there will be a bounce house, s’mores and lots of fun for everyone. Proceeds fund the Stevensville High School fall sports teams and many of those athletes will be on hand to run with participants and encourage the runners, especially the younger runners. Stevensville Founders Day, a celebration of 174 years as a community, will be held Sunday, September 27 at 2 p.m. at Historic St. Mary’s Mission in Stevensville. The event will feature a re-enactment of the Salish Indians welcoming the Black Robe Missionaries in 1841, as well as presentations by Salish tribal members, guided tours and the annual Knights of Columbus barbecue. A fun-filled wildlife presentation by Doc Wild, aka Dennis Olson, renowned wildlife educator from the Glacier National Park area, will take place at the North Valley Public Library on Tuesday, September 29 at 6 p.m. Doc Wild has taught and performed throughout the country, and he will present his “Unhuggables” program.
