June 3rd, 1917 to June 6th, 2014
Leona Ruth Lyndes Likes passed into the Lord’s arms on June 6th 2014, of natural causes.
Leona was 97 years young. Our mother was born on June 3rd 1917, in Blackwell, Okalahoma to parents Otis and Ruth Lyndes.
Leona at just two months old traveled by train to Hyshem, Montana, with her parents. When mom was five years old, along with her sister and parents they again traveled by train to Hamilton, with the families residence being on Sleeping Child Road.
Leona attended Grantsdale School until graduating the 8th grade. Mom then went to Hamilton High School and graduated in 1934.
Leona traveled back to Oklahoma to attend Oklahoma State University and majored in education. Leona’s first teaching assignment was in Ronan, Montana, High School. Mom and Dad met in this small town of Ronan. They married on June 13th, 1941.
Dad was called by Uncle Sam, Dad enlisted in the US Army.
Mom went to live with her parents in Hamilton, while Dad served four years in England during World War II.
Mom enjoyed playing the piano, and was good at card games.
Mom and Dad built their home on Sleeping Child Road. Together they spent a lifetime on their ranch.
Mom grew many gardens, canning and preparing for the winters ahead. Mom always had a sewing project going.
Mom was active in 4-H, Grantsdale PTA, was a member of the Federated Church. Mom was a lifetime member of the Rocky Mountain Grange and attended Cow Belles. Mom was a cancer survivor.
Mom is survived by her three children: Charles (Marilyn) Likes of Yuba City, California, Susan (Troy) Meade of Renton, Washington, and Linda (Charles) Couey of Hamilton, Montana;
six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, one great great granddaughter and many nephews and nieces.
At Mom’s age she was still able to travel to Vegas, California, Seattle and many other adventures, all of which she enjoyed. Mom enjoyed being on the go.
Mom was preceded in death by her husband Charles, her parents Otis and Ruth Lyndes, three sisters: Margaret, Dorothy, Doris; an infant brother and a great great grandson.
Mom, you will be truly missed by all of those that loved you. God Bless you until we meet again.
The family wishes to invite all those who knew Mom to a celebration of life on Saturday, September 5, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Grantsdale Community Church. Our family suggests in lieu of flowers to please make donations to the Grantsdale Community Church or to the Bitterroot Humane Society.
