This was an abbreviated week in high school sports with most schools out on Spring Break. Hamilton and Corvallis competed in a non-scoring event at Polson on Thursday. With two teams that are very talented, Hamilton and Corvallis will be pushing each other throughout the season.
In the track events, Corvallis’ Taylor Sylvester won the 100 and the 110 hurdles. Jesse Sims won the 200-meter race and then went to the field events where he took both the shot put and the discus events. Back on the track, Josh Jessop won the 800 and Ronald Venema took the 1,600-meter race for the Blue Devils. Cameron Koerner won the pole vault. The Corvallis 400 relay team won that race. Tylor Olson won the javelin.
Hamilton’s Cameron Meikle won the 3,200 race with a time of 10:01.27. Hamilton’s 1,600 relay team also won. Casey Ryter won the high jump with a leap of 5’8”. Ky Burch won another triple jump with an effort of 39’5”.
Penny Jessop was a double winner for Corvallis. She won both the 100 and 200-meter race. Amelia Gardner won the 800. The Corvallis 1,600 relay team of Katelyn Frost, Hannah Gale, Penny Jessop and Halee Jessop took that race with a time of 4:26.16. Jane Booth once again won the high jump with a leap of 5’2”. Zena Smith won the shot put.
The Hamilton girls put together a nice run also. Keelie O’Brien won the 400. Kaitlin Stromberg took the 1,600 and Jacie Schmalz won the 3,200. Taylor Bess won the 100-meter hurdles and ran a leg on the winning 400-meter race. Joining Bess on the 400 relay team were Lyric Devries, Keelie O’Brien and Annika Moore. Moore once again won the triple jump with a leap of 34’2”. Baylie Duce won the long jump. Caitlin Gillespie won the 300 hurdles. Aleesha Redmon won the discus.
Darby, Victor and Florence competed in the Jim Johnson Invitational at Dornblaser Field in Missoula on Thursday. Some teams were short-handed because of the holiday and trips. Thompson Falls won the boys team scoring and Plains won the girls.
The Darby boys finished seventh in the 17-team field. Garrett McCormack won the 800. Joe Caicedo won the javelin with a throw of 168’5”. Evan Duggan was second in the 3,200. Kye McCollaum was sixth in the 300 hurdles.
The Darby girls finished fourth behind Plains, Arlee and Thompson Falls. Keely Ehmann won the 400 and was second in the 200. Lily Lang won the 3,200 and was second in the 1,600. Peyton Muir was fifth in the 300 hurdles. The Darby 400 meter relay team finished fourth and the 1,600-relay team was second behind Plains. Tori Johnston was fourth in the long jump.
The seniors on Victor’s team were on their senior trip but underclassman Jesse Pearson had a nice showing. He finished sixth in the 200, and third in the long jump. Kolton Benish was sixth in the triple jump. Jasmine Drewien of Victor finished fourth in the 400.
Florence’s Justin Jones was sixth in the 3,200. Connor Thorne tied for third at 5’8” in the high jump. Cameron Weber was tied for sixth in that event. Ally Rust finished fourth in the 100 hurdles for Florence.
