Stevensville – Susan D. Eakins passed away peacefully on November 10, 2014 after a long courageous battle with cancer.
She was born in Chicago on December 13, 1950, the only child of Rita and Truman Deede. She graduated from the University of Houston in 1975 and had a long term career as a Children’s Protective Services social worker finding foster homes for abused children.
After retirement, she finally realized her dream of operating a shelter for abused and rescued farm animals in the Stevensville area for the past seven years.
In her struggle with cancer, she drew on the survival spirit she inherited from her father who was a survivor of the WWII Death March of Bataan and the atomic bomb at Nagasaki where he was a POW.
During her final days, she was deeply gratified and relieved to have found good homes for all her rescued animals. This was accomplished by the extraordinary help of the many friends that she had acquired over the years.
She is survived by her husband Lee Eakins, her daughter Anna Becker, her son Marcus Sabom, and her mother Rita Deede.
