Unethical campaign politics

May 6, 2014 by Editor

Some weeks ago there was a letter printed about campaign signs. It referred to candidates in general who habitually post signs that do not comply with the rules of political practices. More to the point, that letter talks about the implied mindset of candidates who violate the rules time and again because all they have to do when they are reported is correct their postings. They must like wasting the time of the commissioner of political practices and of the watchdogs who report abuses to the commissioner. Beside the fact that they think that they are above the law themselves, they evidently enjoy rubbing that in our faces each election by repeating the performance, those little scamps. But a violation that is far more serious and has graver consequences is when support for a candidate or a particular ballot issue is preached from the pulpit of your own house of worship. It does happen. Please join me in voicing your objection should you be so unfortunate as to witness it. It is immoral, unethical, and illegal. It is a violation that can literally jeopardize the tax-exempt status of a church. Please do not allow anyone to defile the sacredness of your house of worship by bringing political campaigns to the pulpit. That is just so wrong.

I am not sure I agree with you as far as how great an issue some of the signs are though I am with you as far as churches and understand your perspective. I just wanted to say thanks for sharing an intelligent and thought out letter without insulting anyone. That is a refreshing reminder that we can be civil and reasonable in these types of forums. Thanks again.
